That's great context, thank you. I think my only response is that my bar for "incredibly accurate" has gotten very, very low, given the performance here where I'm living now. I obviously haven't done any kind of qua

It's completely inaccurate with regards to "is it raining right now " in San Diego County. Given that, it's predictions are beyond useless. I didn't live here when Dark Sky was still good, but Dark Sky was incredib

Just realized there's an iOS update - it hadn't notified me yet. I'm on an iPhone 14, but still running 17.5.1 for the next few minutes..

I thought this was just me. It's so infrequent I never look into it, but it's maddening when it happens. And it's been happening for years. I usually realize it occurred by finding myself logged out of HN.

Oh that's really interesting.. I didn't realize there was a separate paddle for braking. The PHEVs I've driven only had it in the pedal. I should rent one to try out, seems neat.

Gotcha. I live in a hilly area - regular +/- 2000 ft elevation changes on a given trip. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Brake maintenance sucks, even more than needing new tires.

I've not owned an EV, why would you not have to replace the brakes? I understand that regenerative braking reduces their wear, but that's also offset to some degree by the vehicle being heavier.

That last part is only true if everything went perfectly smoothly. Every single attendee will notice (or have it pointed out to them immediately ) if your display glitches!

It's NumbeR. I don't have an authoritative source other than e.g. [0], but I was around (IRC, mailing lists) when some of these were created. [0]: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/D

I accidentally did this to a vacation home we stayed in once, like weeks after we checked out. It took me a solid minute to piece together 'where the music was going'. I felt so bad; hopefully the house was vacant.

"So painful it contributes to the downfall of your product" need not be the standard. There is a middle ground that takes customer data seriously.

I do, too. Stuff like "what was that restaurant we went to in <random city> in <random year>". I really liked this feature and consciously left it enabled, knowing the privacy tradeoffs.

Browser security enhancements have made enumerating those a lot more difficult, but a quick google suggests there were still tricks to achieve DNS rebinding as recently as 2023. Very possible.
