In cases where you can't predict the future appropriately, sometimes it's better to make prudent decisions that help everyone instead of attempting to punish the sinful. Keep in mind that bank shareholders and senior management ar

It may be trite to even mention it at this point, but for fun I gave all the example code in the article to ChatGPT and it correctly explained the problem in all but one case (the whitespace one). Pretty cool!

I watched the video and in this case the "recovered" detail is clearly natural to me. The original case does look like some kind of moon-specific processing, but this one with clipped highlights seems natural and can be achieved u

There is a line in the constitution that says "The validity of the public debt of the United States, ... shall not be questioned." Some interpret this to imply that the courts could intervene in any case where legislative action w

Looks great on my Android phone. On my Linux desktop with a 4k screen, it renders at ~2 fps and looks absolutely horrible. Hopefully this will be fixed!

On the other hand, the servers at restaurants in SF make more than most software engineers in Western Europe now. So probably good to focus a little more on economic growth.

A better analogy would be if you were hiring rapists at your company and it turned out that they had themselves been victims of sexual assault, then you may want to know what's going on. Your analogy is completely missing the entire po

Yes, but it's not realistic to believe people will use apps like Briar. The user experience is not good enough.

IMO the most realistic way to improve this situation is to get more people using E2EE chat apps, and fight against any attempt by government to weaken or ban encryption. Meta the company hates this and is spending money on ads trying to get

This is not quite right though. In objective collapse theories, there is an "us" to do the observing, and there is a collapse event which samples randomly from the possible outcomes. Both the "us" and the sampling are ad

What's your ldap? I can look you up and see what you were working on, and whether it required making design decisions around reduced average system latency. And yeah this is exactly my point. If you present a "standard and common&

You are talking about minimizing the expected or average latency, which is very rarely important. The actual goal will depend on the broader system but typically you want to minimize the latency of the worst 95%, 99%, 99.9% etc of requests.

I do, but I don't interview SREs. "Production down" situations are hopefully rare, so the purpose of the interview is to understand if the engineer can plan ahead by adding monitoring, logging, and knobs, and to know how to d

Well for my own startups I don't do system design interviews. I don't think they're perfect and there are better ways of measuring the same thing if you have more time per candidate. Big companies like Google have to sometime

What I am saying here is that it's not true in all cases, so candidates should avoid blurting out rehearsed sentences like that. Caches usually reduce load on the thing behind the cache. They can sometimes reduce latency in ways that m

In practice, "latency" is too vague to be what matters. In many systems it's the worst 1% or 0.1% of latencies that matter. Adding a cache will improve latency in those cases only in some situations. Usually adding caches hel
