Online retail does an amazing job of selling things that people already know they want. It's terrible at helping people discover things they didn't know that wanted (look at AMZN's recommendation engine -- still very dumb.) T

In the late 90s, my downtown SF software employer proposed cubicles for the developers in the new office nearby. The team revolted, with good reason, and offices were installed in the new space.

I certainly could be wrong. As you say, you won't know without trying. The geography is going to play a big part, too. The average landlord in SF is going to understand startup economics much more than, say, in Texas or Michigan.

I think you'll find that the universe of supply where the landlord wants to rent a space for equity AND the startup wants to rent that particular space AND both agree on an amount of equity is very, very small. So, your marketplace is

Ironically, their CEO search process reflects the bureaucratic nightmare that is today's MSFT. Why not just park Gates in an office and interview the 10 best MSFT senior execs?

I don't think two devs can always do what a biz guy and a dev could do. There are often things that "Business People" will do better by specializing. For example, developing a direct, high-touch sales model. Most devs have little interest
