And another one: you can upgrade 6.06 (a Long Term Support release) directly to 8.04 (the next Long Term Support release), but to get to 7.04 you had to do incremental upgrades to every intermediate release (6.06 -> 6.10 -> 7.04).

It has the cost of being highly configurable. I could make the same font (Verdana) look much better on Linux than on Windows, by fiddling with dpi/hinting/subpixel rendering settings. And I could make it look worse. It was much easier

I think an LTS version of Ubuntu would be better than Debian, if you want longer upgrade cycles. ZaReason and System76 are two vendors that sell laptops with Ubuntu. I don't know if they actively support Ubuntu upgrades for their hardware

For what it's worth, I've had numerous Thinkpads (T23, T42, currently typing this on a T61) and suspend/resume always worked for me. Not always right out of the box -- I had to research workarounds for video-related problems a few years ago

And the trick to getting used to things is finding the right mnemonic. I used to get tripped up by 'ln -s' all the time, until I realized that if I thought about 'cp src dst' but with 'cp' replaced 'cp' with 'ln -s' it suddenly made sense.

I've used pdftohtml -xml from poppler-utils for similar purposes (text with position info; I wasn't interested in images although I believe pdftohtml handles them too). Poppler is the library that pdftohtml uses for this.
