Well, same here, after all I'm on HN during the weekend (half-working, planning a conf, while supervising my kid & friend).. There are all sorts of people, but if we're going to generalize, I think the general expectation shou

I know very few people who actually put in lots of hours and who do productive work. It's just that at first, you have to put in more time to find what you're good at. In many non-US cultures, overwork is a symptom of bad time man

I don't mean to be pedantic, but Gitlab helps to host your own private git repos, which fits the title of the article. The article goes further, giving an example of how you can do some bare metal git hosting on a lightweight VM. It&#x

Still though, Cyrillic was imposed on Kazakhstan and was adopted fairly recently, it's not the same in Bulgaria. Fully agree on the rest though. And nice blog! И аз съм живял в България за няколко години. :)

In big cities, I think that between higher fuel efficiency and the small margins that stations make, it's not surprising to see the smaller stations close. (Anecdotally, in my neighbourhood, a few stations closed, our tiny neighbourhoo

On one large free software project, we adopted Mattermost (an open source / self-hosted equivalent of Slack). We went from ~12 active users and ~50 lesser active users, to ~ 100 active and ~ 500 lesser active users. I agree that more f

Trivial example: Debian vs Ubuntu, when Ubuntu used upstart. Now I don't need to worry about process management anymore and can provide better Ubuntu support. Although I'm speaking with my sysadmin hat (I have a few hats). I have

It didn't work out for OpenBSD. I wouldn't generalize so quickly. Mentoring students does take work, some do try and game the system. That happens no matter if GSoC or not. With GSoC, you basically have a form of financial support

Interesting point about ActiveX, but I think that Flash killed (or stopped the proliferation) of ActiveX, at least for video. Flash "just worked". Don't get me wrong, I use Firefox and I don't use Netflix or Flash, but m

I rarely defend customs agents. I'm sure they could flag me just by looking at my public twitter posts, which use my real name. I have already decided to avoid the US anyway. However, Canada can be just as bad. Bottom line: know the la

As someone from Canada, that guy was being a total dick, very aggressive, mansplaining the agent, which isn't surprising that it would trigger the customs agent. He would have had the same response from an agent at the border in Canada
