Every host on an IP network, from servers to personal computers to networked printers, is assigned an IP address, a unique identifying number that is used to communicate with other hosts on the same network, or globally. This statement st

You forgot to add: "and not because it appears incendiary to suggest that the HN community may be changing for the worse." That'd make for a convincing argument.

Perfect analogy right there. See Tim Bray doesn't know operator precedence rules . It's perfectly possible to live and work and thrive without memorizing everything. This is what being an engineer is all about. Yet the FUD that goes into i

1. That's what I said. Are you sure you read the whole post? 2. That's exactly what the underlying problem is; oversimplifications regarding interview processes, a complex enough human interaction as it is.

That's a failure of the interviewer in my opinion. Means he managed to intimidate (not pressure ) the guy/gal enough to back off.

You're right, and that's why I asked if nobody really "brute-forced" it, but one probably never knew about meshes and never wondered about the # of links in them until one has had someone describe it to them. My objection, if you will, is t

CS students that haven't taken graph theory yet probably don't know the number of links in a mesh grid. Have you considered that? And honestly, are you telling me that nobody answered in "however long it takes", ie. nobody just counted th

I don't have a link to the official announcement, so I can't be certain, but I doubt they're going to build their own hardware architecture. It's reasonable to think they will develop a new OS; one can only hope to see an actual OS based

Not only robots or spoofing modify UserAgent. Mobile devices, HTTP client apps, validators, libraries, feed readers, or privacy-concious users can also do that. Then again, if one's user base includes none of the above, one can certainly en

I don't think it's unusual; it's very rare for job postings to say anything of substance about what the job/position really entails. From May to September, while I was looking for a job, I must've read a thousand or more of job descriptions

Although I can imagine a significant number of CRC32 operations in high-capacity gateways (LTE gateways, IP core routers and so forth), Intel processors are not so prevalent in those areas (edit: anecdotal, of course, it's just my perceptio

Randomly substitute numbers for letters that look similar. The letter ‘o' becomes the number ‘0′, or even better an ‘@' or ‘ '. (i.e. m0d3ltf0rd like modelTford)* This is essentially useless. Decent password cracker tools already try such

How is it pointless? Don't you find a visualization of abstract operations or code useful? How hypocritical. Besides, the question 'Why does AES work the way it does?' is a completely different topic which should only be touched after the

What I mean is that the conversion: unsigned int flags = -1; always works, regardless of whether negative numbers are represented in two's complement, one's complement, or sign/magnitude on the underlying hardware.

Don't know why you were downvoted, the whole chmod "problem" is a storm in a teacup. I'm surprised nobody commented on the last guy's reply (no problem had occurred yet). Apparently all were busy watching the sky fall.
