That is a nice instance, an optimization solver took 13 seconds to solve instead of the 0.2 seconds for the problem posted by the OP. Some people in combinatorial optimization are addressing the problem of finding the hardest Sudoku problem

While genetic algorithms are useful for solving certain problems, Sudoku puzzles exhibit a strong combinatorial structure that can be exploited by other approaches (Constraint Programming above all, I think). When modeled as feasibility pro

As an instructor myself, I must admit I did take this just a little seriously.

Very interesting read. The final part is a bit of a stretch: I have long argued that degree-granting programs should employ "fire-walking" as a last exam. The chair-person of the program should wait on the far side of a bed of red-hot coal

While I agree with that, I thought he said the only source of wealth is ideas and then say it's manufacturing instead.

The author seems to appreciate the wealth produced by ideas , at least here: Why do I finger innovation? Because innovation defies all laws of conservation: with innovation, you create wealth out of nothing. One day, you have nothing in y

Related discussion on HN: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1058946 I'm still a bit sad Schumacher Clean never shows up in these lists.

In the phase diagram on Wikipedia, which is more precise, shows a negative slope on the transition frozen-liquid, unlike the sketched version on the second video, which, I guess, is for all other elements. On such a negative slope, if the t

No matter how natural and necessary this might be, it doesn't happen very often that someone fights for a group he/she doesn't belong to. Hats off once more to JGC for that.

Classify the players' smiles, from none to light-up-the-locker-room. Then see how long the players lived. I haven't read the research article, and I agree that smiling doesn't hurt, but this post surely doesn't make it sound very scientif

And even then, which do you find more convincing, the fact that there is an argument - which you have never read, and have no intention of reading - for which none of the hundred or so errors found so far have proved to be fatal, or the fa

I fail to understand how this can be useful. Seems an (inverse) application of an old method: to say something wise, first think of something foolish and then say the opposite.

There is a Wordpress plugin that accepts a LaTeX formula between "$latex" and "$" and places a PNG image. Handy when you have webpages for math-related teaching. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-latex/

It's a rather complicated way to ensure that all points have y coordinate between 2 and 4, thus cutting all lines that would extend out of the "writable" two squares. That expression equals zero if and only if 2<=y<=4. (edit) If you

There are a few examples of how this can be done. One of them is Mathematical Programming Computation (MPC), a journal where articles submitted must be accompanied by the source code that was used to produce the results. The article is peer

True, monaco9 looks a lot like clean12. However, I use a 13point version for coding. It's a little taller and for that reason, in my opinion, clearer. If schumacher disappears, I should look for monaco 10pts, as I can't find it on my linux
