Being able to (usually) personalize your comments I think also played a huge role in fostering community: avatars, taglines, signatures, etc. I wrote my own tagging system for HN and it's hard to describe how much it changed the experi

I still haven't found something that is quite as good as delicious was for finding other 'curators' with similar tastes (and then being able to filter what they curated by tag, iirc).

I like what Microsoft has been doing so far and I suspect it's worked out well for them. I bought the Xbone primarily because I would be able to play all the 360 games that I already had. Of course, I didn't bother doing so in pra

Maybe in the boiled-frog US situation it's called policing. I consider this kind of stuff pure fascist-adjacent behavior that is extremely concerning.

I honestly don't see how the threat is from 'all sides', but I honestly do want to try to understand that point of view. From my perspective, the US is run by right-wing nutjobs, for many of whom the 'quacks like a duck&

For me that's the deciding factor to favor 'the protestors' even when that includes those who just want to loot or burn stuff. The police should be held to a much higher standard, considering the power they have. And it'

While I do not entirely disagree, I think a /very/ important caveat is that a lot of these domains involve not a particular level of skill in itself, but a lot of domain knowledge that is entirely a matter of 'knowing'.

I spent some time in the Dallas-Fort-Worth area, staying at a typical suburbian region. This was before I had a car or driver's license. It was shocking to me how isolated I was. There was a gas station that I could walk to, but even g
