I see all the negative comments but I'm asking this with genuine curiosity. Do high school students not really work any more? Maybe they legally can't at a Beer Garden, even if it's washing dishes? When I was in high school I

I somehow lucked out and was able to find an appointment on my first try. My friend, in contrast, couldn't find anything and ended up driving to Yakima from Seattle to get a shot from FEMA. I don't understand this. Why would a lar

I went back to school to take a couple classes at a public school in a red state. It definitely has changed but it wasn't that bad. My observations around this: * Lots more platitudes. Nearly every teacher in the CS department had sign

I can accept a definition of scam that includes fiat. Though it definitely doesn't track the same way with cryptocurrency. I associate nootropics with scams but I definitely don't think all nootropics are scams. If someone said,

That doesn't address my point: Couldn't Google just have increased the rank of pages with minimal Javascript and faster load times? I think you might be strawmanning why some HN folks don't like AMP. To me, at least, it looks

I'm still confused what problem AMP was fixing. Google could just make page speed more important in their rankings. They probably don't because page speed isn't as important as content quality in regards to what people are lo

I realize given how much hardship other people have experienced so this comes across as rather callous, but for this reason 2020 has been one of the best years in my career. In-person interactions add stress on top of my normal work stress.

I mean it isn't that people actually think "stocks only go up", it's that the donor class own stocks and that then means political landscape is designed to always bail them out. I'm closer to your age and experience

I should have said "engage in illegal activities" to be more precise. If I wanted to, right now, buy drugs online, engage in illegal online gambling, ransom someone's data, etc it will most likely be done in BTC or maybe Mone

I'm skeptical of crypto but the strongest case certainly seems to be for funding illegal activities and capital flight. If you had to flee your country gold/silver will be far more trouble than BTC.

Is this snark or is the difference between what free-speech looks like today and 30 years ago not apparent? What people are nostalgic for is the ability to have semi-anonymous semi-ephemeral speech. For example: The ability to have a privat

You touch on a good point. The irony here is that "cancel culture" only works because labor's power is poor. If it is expensive (e.g Joe Rogan - Spotify deal) or difficult (e.g Steven Pinker - tenured) to fire people it seems

I'm very skeptical the censorship is working. Censorship has created a whole class of "intellectual" that is using alternative platforms (e.g Joe Rogan and Dave Rubin) to espouse their points of view. Those podcasters have en
