Email is not the same as Usenet posting. Perhaps that's where some are diverging in this debate. Email evolved and is, as far as I understand it and usually use it, an electronic form of letter writing. If we want to talk about how you foru

You might want to check your assumptions and read my post. The subject of my entire post was what literary form was appropriate to what medium. I've been using BBSes and the subsequent networks since 300 baud modems. Perhaps I was influence

I may be taking an "old school" approach to this, but I top post. That top post is an actual coherent written document that answers the questions with enough context to make it clear that it's answering questions. If you treat email like ch

That would be a pretty bad idea since checks include all the information someone needs to make hard to reverse withdrawals from your account. Knuth used to send checks but no longer does. See http://sunburn.stanford.edu/~knuth/news08.html

I wonder if Calcanis didn't accept the 10% offering as his eventual intent was go for 50% with this sort of action. It's one reason not to actually accept anything, the belief that by leaving it materially open one can get more later. If he

Reading about Firesheep you'd find out that the session cookie is passed in the clear and acquiring that allows you to steal someone's session. This is easy on WiFi. That's why it matters.

A tie in to "get directions to here" or "buy a ticket to the nearest airport" or other things related to getting there could be a fun way to potentially make some money off of this. As someone who loves to travel, this site is really effect

As someone who has made regular expression acceleration products, we were aware of this possibility but we didn't ever implement a proof of concept. The range of applications is pretty staggering just in network and host security. I'm inter

Google has corporate personhood and the right of political speech that comes with it. One would hope that the right of political speech also came with a responsibility to improve the system. If there isn't any responsibility attached to pol

"Don't be evil", if it actually means anything, sets a limit more strict than the legal in terms of what activities are acceptable to perform in order to maximize shareholder value. If they didn't claim a higher standard you'd be right, but

It's my impression that this sort of "fun" work is still done in firmware engineering at Broadcom for instance.

Embedded and firmware engineering questions expect this as an answer. Anyone following your advice will not be taken seriously. This is true regardless of whether you're correct factually. Readers of this thread deserve to know that.

I'm pretty skeptical of all advertising now. I learned that in college not from it failing to prepare me for work, but because that was explicitly taught in classes. If people need defenses from the colleges now then perhaps that needs to b

These people are serious. They think they're entitled to a job after graduation from school. One of my younger acquaintances was asking around about how to sue his art school for not providing an education that got him a job.

There's a pretty interesting blog about eBooks and publishing and the link. This entry http://jakonrath.blogspot.com/2010/09/acquisitions-editor.ht... is a more humorous approach to the question of eBook costs.

I'm a little disappointed with the approach this article takes to it's main thesis, which is that the "majority" don't remember what they read. He writes "anecdotal evidence suggests" twice in the only part that justifies his own experience
