I used to buy math and science books all the time. I probably read 25% of the books I bought. I quit buying books in general after I moved. Moving 500 books sucks. Now I only buy math and science books if I actually plan to work through the

I used to be a prolific ranter with an interest in Lisp. Running into Eric's posts inspired me to give that up - I didn't want online rants to be my legacy. Related, Xah Lee's crazy writings inspired me to take my social life seriously and

This is how I got started programming professionally. During my freshman year, my CS prof had funding for a climate research project and he first set me up as a UNIX admin then a C and Perl programmer. In addition to learning UNIX and progr

There's no: you broke the law, but factor X and Y should increase our leniency. Actually you're completely wrong. The legal system is there to look at factors X and Y and determine if and how they should affect the ensuing penalties or aw

It's too early to search for anything besides large expo sized events. Smaller events are often only announced a month or even a week before they occur.

I like James R. Newman's "The World of Mathematics." It's a four volume set and you can often find it at a used bookstore for next to nothing.

I miss Bozeman, MT, but this is one of the reasons I'll never be returning. I guarantee that most of the population there doesn't see why this would be a big deal. Drunk driving is a forgivable offense, actin' up on the internet is not.

It's an encyclopedia of essays on math topics. It's very comprehensive and well edited. However, while it's a cool book, speaking as a former math tutor, it isn't the most helpful from a self study perspective.

Google wants to own a piece of a biotechnology company because it is owned by the wife of one of the founders Still, I've always wondered why this was an investment by Google, rather than having the money come out of Sergey's pocket.

Having sequoia and NEA also helps a lot beyond the dollars. How do they help beyond the dollars? I did two startups backed by Sequoia and they didn't provide any help besides the money.

There is a theme park aspect to Silicon Valley but the Detroit analogy isn't a very good one. Plus, wasn't Digg in The City? The SF startups have traditionally been sillier and more prone to the party and gossip scene than the ones in the S

Heh. Well, I dunno what to tell you. You can probably do some sort of auto-forward + reply-to: address kludge to fake it. It sucks, but to be honest I personally don't mind. I've been making apps with the push API and beta testing the AIM c
