I have seen several mentions of James-Stein estimator being almost an empirical Bayesian estimator, but this article made it more clearer. Thanks for sharing.

This is great news for Julia and the scientific computing community in general. MATLAB doesn't scale, and python solutions are too scatter brained for me.

This method is computationally very intensive. Betti numbers are hard to estimate from data, statistically speaking.

It's amazing that they had just one set of machines to make all their chalk. I hope the South Korean version would be successful.

Nice. I like that you let people download easily. One thought: the font for '1' and 'l' are too similar, and often confusing.

When I see documents nicely type set with LaTeX, I have a prior expectation that it is more likely true.

I used to love Prolog, but Prolog is not general purpose. This has 'pi', 'cat', some imperative, and prolog taste in it...most interesting.

Well, it will call for evolution in the ethical system. It's not an excuse to not simulate "brains" or build artificially intelligent systems.

They do this kind of publicity stunt all the time. Simulating a model of biological neural network doesn't mean much. We don't know how the brain works yet.

This article is misleadingly written...I am a scientist, and I disagree with the author's liberal use of language. Especially regarding the "low-probability events"...

And yet, I have high hopes in science. It is not the most efficient system, but it is the only system that is consistently working well to advance our knowledge. We definitely have a lot of room to improve though.
