Well yeah, that is the broader issue for sure. As you say, the change needs to come from regulation or consumer pressure. The power that the data brokers can provide to businesses is too great to ever reasonably expect them to resist. If yo

Advertising for prescription drugs is not allowed in Sweden. Pharmacy ads are for non-prescription items like sunscreen, deodorant, whatever. I'd guess that the largest margins are on those items anyway, considering the subsidizing

You can argue that they trust developers to be responsible. Having a user friendly and powerful SDK with tons of possible data points isn't inherently a bad thing. All of the features could be used in a responsible fashion, and FB th

The reason is almost always to be able to do conversion tracking. I.e. to follow the trail from a specific ad campaign to a completed purchase in order to evaluate the campaign performance. There are of course ways to do this while preservi

I don't understand how this would be an escape hatch though. If some sort of quantum randomness is essential for the emergence of consciousness, it could be incorporated into an algorithm as well. It wouldn't be strictly determini

The only major downside with hooks is that they are sort of non-intuitive imo. Writing UIs with hooks once you grok it properly is really nice and terse. What's your beef with them?

The problem is that all tigers want steak, but only a fourth of them can afford it. That number is increasing as the tigers get richer in general. And the steak industry is ruining the world.

I don't think the point is to describe a probable future where everyone lives like the Dutch. The whole point is that it wouldn't be possible. It's just an easy to understand illustration of how our current civilization is la

It's interesting to see population growth being listed as one of the prime factors, and that "Girl's Education" is proposed as a solution to this. I get why sex-ed and more widespread access/knowledge/acceptanc

I just summarized what I read elsewhere. I have never seen one in real life. It does look good in the comparison you linked. It is being backlit though, while the E-ink is not. Maybe the mentioned blandness is more of a problem when used fu

Had to read up on this, because it's very interesting. The short of it seems to be that production runs of Mirasol panels had very high fault rates, which lead to delays and losses. Qualcomm ultimately decided to abandon it and to full

Your dismissive tone is almost comical. I'd personally love to have an e-ink laptop. Currently it's unthinkable for me to be in a beautiful spot in the sunshine while doing some light coding or writing. Seems like this product wo

I'm well aware of hybrid apps and Ionic. I wouldn't call those solutions properly "web" though. They're basically only using web tech as a presentation layer, and deferring to native plugins to do the heavy lifting

That was painful indeed! Why you would use Flutter for something that seems to be web-only, and on a govt website that presumably values accessibility, is beyond me.

It's hard to quantify exactly what "everywhere" means, but for the vast majority of end-user devices, you'll have a more efficient Flutter build target than web. You're probably right in that they are pushing the &q

The way it atleast used to be framed is that web is a fallback target. Meaning if the target device isn't running Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS or Android (unlikely), then hey, you can atleast build a passable version that will run in a

I have yet to see a world in which local file access, background services, local notifications, timers, alarms, native media controls, etc, works as well on web as in native apps. A lot of it is there "in theory", but web tech has

I never coded React Native, but I have a lot of experience with Flutter. You can definitely run into build issues, but it's almost exclusively when doing precarious things like upgrading third party packages, SDKs or Flutter versions.

While the sentiment is good, I don't think that this approach scales very well. The unfortunate truth is that doing things the standard, bloated way has a lot of benefits. Speed is the obvious one. Mind share is another. You can do you

It's not that weird. Before PLEX, it wasn't "grinding for $0", but it was "grinding to get the Ishtar heavy assault cruiser". Making the monetary value visible the way that MTX does sort of kills the allure.

There are both, but the NPC ones are largely holding players that are very casual or new. Most of what you read about are probably not corporations though, but alliances. Alliances are groups of player owned corporations that work together.

I'm sure there are some significant downsides to Steam being a dominant platform, as is always the case. That being said, I think Steam has been pretty decent for Indie devs in other ways. The Greenlight program seems pretty successful
