There's a lot of talk about the great filter this, and the great filter that. Even if life is abundant, what gives you the impression that civilization level intelligence would be? Out of all the species that ever roamed the earth, on

So just to clarify, the new-meter would be smaller if judging solely by the extent in space? But not compared to any other physical object since they are all kept together by forces that are constant regardless of space?

Sorry for also asking a space 101 question, but since the fabric of space is expanding, does that mean that things are getting bigger as well? Naively, it would seem that way. In your balloon example, the dots would get bigger.

You would need to supply a lot of power just to maintain a vacuum and levitating your flywheel. Not sure this solution would be very effective. Maybe with superconductors, but then cooling is your problem instead.

That's such a stupid example though. I'd assume the sky was looking in such a way that it could be interpreted as either. A nice sunset gradient perhaps? Averaging the color spectrum values or hypothetically mixing colors is ridic

The idea behind this is brilliant, and I support the sentiment. Unfortunately, for this to work effectively, you really need to be accurate and precise. As others pointed out, a lot of the items lacks sources and/or have questionable v

The problem with e-ink is that redrawing pixels without cycling leads to ghosting after a few draws. Most displays automatically cycles the entire screen now and then to mitigate this. I guess it's up to software or firmware to detect

It depends on the granularity you need. If you need to manage clusters and scaling and individual machines then you might need to spend some time going through docs/books/tutorials for the cloud and tech in question. If you just w

Can't edit my comment for some reason, but I just wanted to correct myself in that just-in-time encoding is a thing that exists and is being used. Only lately has it been in significant use for non-live content though. The standard pra

Not sure what you mean with reencoding for each client? AFAIK no major streaming does this realtime. They reencode the content once from source into a number of bitrates and formats, put the result on a CDN and then use DASH/HLS/S

I despise DRM as much as the next guy, but its existence makes perfect sense. The moment someone explains to a C level at a studio how easily the content could "leak" from a site without it, it's out of the question to not ha

Could someone explain the USP of utilizing the browser platform for game dev? As far as I know, the usual suspects in the game engine world can compile to web as well as the other major platforms. Wouldn't relying on web runtimes and a

The argument wasn't that they were equal, but that the ARM chip appeared _more_ performant than the x64 one. It's a legit point that refresh rate could make it appear so even if the actual performance is roughly the same.

A black market will always exist as it does for anything. The problem we're trying to solve is the power of a huge market solely tapped by criminal enterprises. You don't see narcostates formed by black market tobacco or alcohol.
