Yeah that is hairy. And I would say that for many organizations, if a group decides to attempt the extraction and reuse of a module, they should be prepared to adopt the mindset and working style of a library maintainer. Because once you ge

I definitely relate to this. Just recently I had need of a printer and I was thankful I had stashed an old Canon inkjet printer in the attic. It technically is new enough to have wifi, but it was one of the first of that generation so it&#x

This is an amazing collection of advice and experience. I'm not a woman in tech but I have worked with and managed plenty. I really appreciate this list being shared and publicized. Hopefully it helps some people stay in the field long

I made something very similar, but the device I'm controlling is an RGB LED attached to the GPIO pins on a Raspberry Pi zero. https://github.com/mekane/Node-API-for-Raspberry-Pi-GPIO I made some bash scripts that

In my first office job I remember thinking that I should take up smoking, not just because my coworkers were heading downstairs all the time to take breaks, but because the HR higher-ups were smokers too. My office-mates who smoked always h

I recently went to renew a domain I own that I was getting notifications about, and discovered that my other two versions of the same domain (i.e. the .net and .org ones) had already expired but I wasn't getting any emails about those!

That's a really crappy policy if I'm understanding it right - not provide a mobile device but insist on completely managing one if they choose to use it for company business? What a shitty way to treat people working for you.

I feel exactly the same way. Why on earth would I invest any time or money into a product only to have it disappear out from under me? Lately I find myself putting more and more energy into preparing for my eventual departure from all thing

I find this terrifying because I have worked with county-level government organizations in the past, and have seen some truly horrendous and ancient systems. But they have such a high level of control over important things in one's lif

I'll admit that the announcement gave me hope and made me feel positively about AirBnB - I'm sure it was carefully crafted to do just that. But I'm glad I came across your comment because it gave me the cold splash of realism

I absolutely pay better attention when I can give my hand and the rest of my brain something mindless to do. Doodling helps me listen and retain a lot more than if I'm forced to just stare at the subject - in that case I get fidgety an
