> There’s swaths of competent people abroad that are happy to take your (overpaid) place How is it overpaid? Engineers provide a lot more value than they are getting paid. If anything, people abroad are underpaid.

Just a nitpick but Django is definitely not convention over configuration, you might be thinking of Rails. > At the same time things such as realtime/WebSockets feel so unnecessarily complex in Django and so much easier to work with

That's something only you (or your team) can answer. Does one of them help you solve a problem better than the other? If you can't articulate an answer to that, then I would suggest using whichever your team is most productive in.

I agree. Can we stop with this type of talk? It's a huge turn off, and that is coming from someone who considers himself left of center. Who do they think they are reaching with this rhetoric?

Man, I remember reading this article while I was still getting my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering (a little over 10 years ago) but was tinkering with programming. Made the switch to software and am now a senior software engineer. Didn’t

They don’t sound so useless to me then :) They clearly led to the development of skills that produce great economic value.

FAANG is engineers do great but not sure I’d classify the vast majority of them as rich...

Yes, becoming a wealthy doctor is rare. Again, the original point isn’t that it’s impossible to get rich by selling your time but that you’ll most likely need some leverage (i.e. in the form of owning a business)

I was super skeptical about getting a Roomba, but there was a great deal during around the holiday's last year, and we pulled the trigger. I'm still 100% happy with the purchase. Does it vacuum as well as a person? No, absolutely

No, in the case of attaching it to the car it is moving with you (and would thus trigger the alert). Your point still stands though that it can be used like that to find out where someone lives.
