This needs to be communicated better. I signed up, created a session, but when I tried to make the session private I got the message about being over the limit and assumed that the attempt to make the session private failed and it remained

Yes, exactly. And if your team consists of perhaps slightly less tech-oriented people (on our team it's the designers), trying to explain what rebase does and how to use it with its exceptions (the "Few notes though..." part of the article)
