Yeah - but you have to be a good enough programmer to really understand the headers.. the 'bootstrapping' problem was real :-) Especially if you didn't live in a metropolitan/college area. My local library was really sh

I started by working on back-end accounting systems - most of those seemed to be COBOL ... or SHUDDER RPG.

Thats sorta the point... at one time or another, those were all projected to be 'the end of programming as we know it'... Hell, COBOL's origins was in IBM wanting to make programming an 'entry level' occupation. Odd

Hmm - I'm not sure I'd say that 'changed programming' - but the internet in general changed 'learning to program'. I can remember when I first discovered gopher and found I could read tons recent material for f

Off the top of my head, I can think of the following during my career: 1. COBOL (we actually did still use it back in the 80s) 2.AI back in the 80s (Dr. Dobbs was all concerned about it ...) 3. RAD 4. No-Code 5. Off-sho

IIRC, that was inspired by the SGI interface. Wonder what other movies saw that and decided to crib it ?

"you literally have to tell it to slow down, focus and think" - This soo much! When I get an unexpected result from claude, I ask it why - what caused it to do such-and-such. After one back and forth session like this putting up t

That sounds neat! I especially like "I give the code a sense of its own emotional state". I can just imagine a function crying "Why did they use that algorithm ?? Why so much spaghetti ?? I'm soo ugly ..Why Why Why"

Yep, it was a 'momentary' glitch in the matrix ... Things came back even stronger then before, and 'off-shore' just became another tool. Its still around, but it hasn't destroyed the domestic programming industry. H

If offshoring started before your time, that might be coloring your perception. I had already been working in tech for decades when the offshoring craze started. It was remarkably similar to the current 'ai craze'. Loads of jobs l

Maybe I should just hang it up and go to bed: That's a Claude Code issue — queued slash commands not executing between steps. you didn't answer me - is that last rule we added to MEMORY.md active and working ? ● Your poin

oh yeah - I get that too. Also, if I tell him to verify something - he'll do a big song and dance about verifying it as correct. Then you point out something very basic and he'll trigger that 'let me do this properly',

Oh - another 'fun' new behavior this week: He contradicted himself within 1 paragraph and when asked about it, admitted the correct answer was explicitly listed in his MEMORY.md file - he just ignored it...

Oh huh ... I actually did a lot of AS/400 & Stratus work back in the 80s. So Infor isn't written in RPG is it? the 400 actually had a decent COBOL compiler but everything seemed to end up in RPG :-/

Just wanted to mention it was nice to see such a down to earth posting. Unfortunately, I've never even heard of the ERP you mentioned, but you sound like a good company to work for :-)

Hmm - don't remember if it was micro-kernel, but AtheOS (1) was a REALLY nice OS developed by a single very talented developer. It included display server, networking, partial POSIX compliance and lots of goodies like GCC, Bash, etc.
