Yeah I used to live right near the SoMa fire station and it was non-stop noise. It's too bad we don't have decent, reliable public transportation so people can be housed relatively cheaply and still be able to get around quickly,

Honestly, I expected inflation for the last 6 years, but we haven't seen it. However, prices are creeping up nicely, in all the desirable places. Is that really that different?

Amazon is widely recognized to have a horrible work culture. Microsoft, for all its evils, does not (or at least didn't, before stack ranking). I know a bunch of people from both places, and the latter group was much happier. Tellingly

False analogy. You should say "Seems to work fine in Chile". Chile and Venezuela are similar countries; both have an abundant natural resource (copper vs oil). The one critical difference is property rights- such a thing does not

I spent most of my childhood reading and doing sports. Didn't ever pay attention in school except math and history, where I lucked out and had good teachers who kicked our asses. Reading/screwing around with computers was a great

Japan has always been fascinating to the West, from the moment Perry told them to open the hell up. Japan has such an interesting wacky culture, architecture, art, lifestyle. They've always had craftsmen the like of whom can compete wi

As opposed to the previous management? 3 heads of product since 2013: Sippey, Graf, Weil. How's that supposed to work?

Amazon had a nice tax dodge for a while too. Lower price for the same thing; not bad.

The interesting question will be the on-going struggle between engineering (Roetter/Weil) and business (Noto/Bain), who actually want to run a profitable company. My bet is Roetter and Weil will be out before the year is done.

I can just see it... Twitch, but for coding. Bring on a tech celebrity for some color, and have a regular commentator and just mock the programmer for their "poor java style".

Ecuador really has very good geography for building space-launch structures (9 very large mountains over 5000m). Probably the perfect place to build something, if you were gonna build it.

Previous to PDX have only confirmed what my friends from their have said- friendly, attractive and "welcoming" women. Contrary to the parent post, people in PDX have lots of casual sex too.

God I wish I was in NYC. The stories I've heard from buddies there! West coast scene is not like this at all, especially not in Man-Francisco or Man-Jose (unless you like men of course).

In all fairness, Canada and Australia are more or less commodity extraction economies with catastrophically inflated real estate markets. Lower commodity prices could prick that situation and cause some jumbled jonathans.

As much as I'd like the US to crash to reality a bit so we can get our house together... a Chinese slowdown + European clusterfuck makes the US the best place to invest, still. That gives this boom a slightly longer lease on life.
