I was excited until I saw "use autotools". edit just bought it. Quick scan reveals some GNU extensions being used, lots of tripe about pkg-config, autotools, how to write a makefile properly without autoconf (commendable), gdb tutorial (l

They better do as to be honest, I'll be fucked if I'm going to use it any more unless it happens. Historically, I have used Windows 8 from CP, to RP and now RTM exclusively. Unfortunately, I now have to use RDP and as a VMware guest regular

Personally that pisses me off as it requires that I fully qualify all my local email addresses as what happens if I have the hostname 'nike' on my local net?

I really don't care. We also, in automated test environments, send email to user@host so it doesn't escape the internal network. I don't have to use a regex if I use the methodology I specified. Simple Java implementation off the top of my

That's a bit silly. There are a couple of things to consider: 1. ACPI power saving modes draw very little current. As long as your computer is configured to drop to that, it's fine. It will resume within 1-2 seconds as well. 2. There are co

I wonder what the total marketshare that corresponds to is? From what I've read, smartphones are still in a niche in china and they primarily use dumbphones and featurephones.

We dont get this. All our desktops are left on 24/7 and laptops are hibernated. I don't get the obsession with boot times - its a rare occurrence.

I came here to have a rant about autotools being mentioned and found a lot of people doing the same. Thats a sign something needs to be taken out in the yard and shot if there ever was one.

I agree with that point, but I think that the people who use the latest and greatest browser tend to upgrade their computers and operating systems regularly. The rest don't know or care. As technology experts on here, we tend to forget that

Versus the bullshit we have to put up from the other vendors who throw out new features which everyone else has to pick up via peer pressure even though they are poorly designed?

Considering the amount of people who whinge incessantly about the latest and greatest browser not being used, why would they then whinge that the latest operating system isn't? So much double-think.

I got that impression during an interview with them in Cambridge in 2005. They genuinely couldn't promise that anything that was done was going to end up in a product or would actually be used. Fortunately I was too crap to be considered a

Is it any more hacky than meta-programming in LISP? It's not elegant. Well some of it is, but most isn't. But it's well understood, matches the philosophy of the operating system and doesn't introduce any new tools or mechanisms which have

I don't understand what is wrong with shell scripts. I mean after all, UNIX is designed to be put together using small programs wired together with scripts. What systemd does is replace that elegance with a monolithic black box.

I think, being a BSD user, we're probably not concerned much about that. Gnome 3 accounts for a miniscule proportion of users. It's less relevant that Gnome 3 doesn't work on BSD to the BSD projects than Gnome if you ask me. Bad PR for Gno

As other people have said, userland ABI/API is solid. I should have clarified that. There is no reason the internal API would be as to be honest it's the Kernel's job to make the drivers sit behind that API and stay there regardless of the
