If an ORM is slow or buggy, you're using it wrong or its crap. Most things that claim to be ORMs are really not very good quality. Try hibernate / nhibernate with ehcache cache backend. We find both to be an order of magnitude faster than h

Actually I think the motivation is that the schema exists in code rather than in the storage engine. That gives the amazing productivity boost of not having to load the schema into the database engine - something you appreciate when you hit

That's usually because the architects don't give a shit about the storage model and recognise that the external interface/contract is far more important and that can be mapped to whatever schema supports the model. That's their domain. All

Oh yes we all live in the land of the ideal where everything is functional and has no side effects of course and we're blessed with parenthesis. There is a huge difference between an if and a function. Consider SICP where lazy evaluation is

We "spike" stuff i.e. do a quick sanity check before we commit to something. A pattern will become apparent there and then if there is one. Sometimes this spike is re-factored into the product or is scrapped and rethought. Multiple eyes see

I'd probably actually break it into TimeSpan arithmetic for the sake of clarity and the fact that it won't require comments or so many brackets: var accumulator = new TimeSpan(); accumulator.Add(TimeSpan.FromMinutes(currentTimeOfDayIn

To be honest, most of the ifs I write are usually error handling conditions so I sort of agree with the principle. If you've been writing OO code for 10-15 years, you evolve into a model which is pretty if and block free. It just sort of ha

In full agreement. We have a rule about only using patterns if they become apparent rather than selecting a pattern up front.

I doubt it. Much as myself, I wouldn't invest without expecting a sensible return. I did stop giving about 2 months ago and poured it all into debian. Now I'm doing the capitalist thing of whinging about how my investment was misused.

I am considering this myself. To be honest, I only got my first 'in my hand all the time' smartphone at the end of last year. The only positive use for it so far has been to check bus times when out (TfL.gov.uk) and read the odd pdf. The la

I can't stand watching people parenting like that. It's sad to see the rejection. To be honest I was a victim of such things back in the day and it did a lot of damage for years. I was always second to whichever current affairs program was

I bought a copy after it was discussed here a while back. Overall it's a very good book and is worth purchasing IMHO. There are some notable holes and assumptions but it's probably the best attempt for a number of years.

Yes I was there then - in fact I had a load of DRM'ed tracks from iTunes back when I owned an iPod. Why would you trust Apple not to do it though? They haven't exactly been trustworthy on any front over the years.

This is the sort of reason I buy my stuff from Amazon / 7digital. The mp3 container format has no provision for DRM so it cannot be abused.
