Fair enough. I did that because the grammars of Thai and English are quite different, in noun-modifier order, distinction between verbs and adjectives, and verb conjugation (those are just the relevant differences here). I could have said

I've had dengue fever. There are a few different strains and I had one of the milder ones but it was still enough to put me in the hospital for dehydration as an otherwise healthy 20yo. In Thai it's known as hemorrhagic fever, bu

I worked on torsion balances, gravity measurements, and gravity gradiometers for my PhD. Getting just a factor-of-two increase in sensitivity is significant--getting 4-5 orders of magnitude better would be incredible and also next to impos

The news article mentions that the student on the paper has passed away. He died of suicide in his lab just a couple weeks after the paper was submitted to Nature [0]. Grad school is hard for a lot of people. Find someone to talk to if y

That's a good reference point. Cost for infrastructure projects usually isn't linear. I've seen an exponent of .6 used to extrapolate costs. (3140km/27km)^.6 * $4.75B = $82B. Adjusting for inflation gives you something

It's a ring, so it should be thought of as something pi 1000km in length, not pi (500km)^2 in area. The inside of the ring is not used for the structure. $32,000/meter sounds pretty generous.

That's an interesting claim. It's true in theory--the information is still there--but what's actually going to do the separation of the noise from the signal?

It depends on what the noise sources are. If you're ADC limited, sure, but if you're limited by something else--detector noise, air turbulence affecting the signal, variation in LED output, noise in the room--a better LED won

Adding the second capacitor is equivalent doubling the area of a single capacitor. If you had a plate capacitor where the plates were extendable you could charge it and decrease the energy by extending the plates, which tells you that there
