Do you rate them 0 stars instead? App companies will stop asking once the technique stops working, but it is super effective right now. If you dont ask people to rate, you mostly get ratings from people who dislike your app.

This. None of the later iphone releases were revolution or amazing. The press is just bored of steady progress. 3G- new case, 3G, gps 3GS- faster. Better camera? 4- retina display 4s - Siri. 5- taller screen, thinner, faster.

I agree, but you can blame the users that then click on the spammy posts and install the promoted apps. They are the reason this is an "effective" technique for viral growth.

I agree, yet I have never heard this technique to describe other auctions. For instance, any time a ridiculous item is for sale on Ebay, the news stories describe the top bid and the number of bidders. Perhaps the actual sum of the max bids

Oh it is traceable, just unstoppable and ungoverned. I assumed that "federally insured" was code for inflation, but the wikipedia article revealed that it is actually insurance: banks pay insurance fees to be in the FDIC.
