I don't view it as a conspiracy, only a very strange thing to observe, for a number of reasons: 1. The only thing which clearly marks this as an ad is the comment just above it in the HTML. Which is strange for two reasons... 2. The la

With any luck, this post will be killed because these sorts of discussions never go well on HN, and help reinforce all the cultural issues everyone pretends don't exist. In the meantime... Firstly, let's put our journalism 101 hat

Irony - this developer, who seems to have a good understanding of ethics and web best practices, on a post about advert blocking, has a link at the bottom of their sidebar: "Essay shark - paper writing service!" This is labelled

"continuous deployment" is not a panacea to the issue. There's two primary ways of doing it, from what I understand: continuous deployment to a dev/test environment is the easiest for most organisations to move to. Due t

Pretty much. It's arbitrary, but is fixed, not the first week or last week of the month (often reporting periods), not Monday, and not the weekend. If you then assume that organisations test the patches, that means they can deploy them

I've worked with a global services industry organisation based in the UK but with MAJOR work happening in the middle east, India and Asia-Pacific regions. To add to that, because so much of the service industry's core activities t

In the IT services industry, we'll often talk about running a "war room" for the hours following a significant change, and then follow with a period of a nominated on-call person who has the authority to wake the project team

There's an interesting game one can play with such sites - get a random location, and try to find your way back to an airport without looking at a map ...Of course, this was easier before google indexed so much countryside....

WSmall comment on Wisecash and the trend for video demos, not features outlined in images and text. If one is working around other people, listening to a recording may not be possible. Skimming a featureset may also be a quicker way of asse

It is worth noting that it is very common for women to be 'promoted' out of technical roles into managerial or administrative positions, often before they have been able to develop true competencies or career plans.

One of my favourite apocryphal stories is the one of the audiophiles coming up to a company stand at a trade show, excited by the new bright orange cable attached to the speakers. The sales guy proclaimed it was a brand new product range th

The most interesting part of page 2, in my opinion, was the below quote: Each degree was divided into 60 parts, each of which was again subdivided into 60 smaller parts. The first division, partes minutae primae, or first minute, became kno

Great comment, although I think I didn't make the intended use of the 10k quite clear enough. Whilst one way of spending it is in live experimentation, yes, and that can be a very good option, I meant it more in a "be prepared to

This. Although there is no age limit on YC applications, there appears to be a natural bias towards younger candidates. Women, however, tend to move into being an entrepreneur later in life, when they have more experience.
