Why is this relevant? Are the proceeds of their labor given to the people they harmed? Who gets to measure the harm? There is, however, a very clear conflict of interest caused by allowing the justice system to benefit financially from the

This is interesting. What triggered them to think this was a lie? Had your boss previously entered a different birthdate, which they remembered and then compared to?

I wonder if this has anything to do with a difference in demographics and college selection behavior of applicants. No data here, but maybe parents are taking an increasing roll in college choice, and the beaurocrats are simply catering to

Well that's interesting. Thanks for responding to my post. If you agree with me, why did you name uniform distribution as requirement number 1? Is that just part of the "official" academic definition or something?

I don't agree that uniform distribution is required for randomness.

Can anybody recommend an anthology available on Kindle that contains this story? Ideally Asimov only, but fine if it also contains stories by others. I couldn't easily find one. Thanks!

That's why I don't play these games. But other people have different preferences and that's okay by me. I don't see a need to judge the company(ies), the users, or the system. Not saying you are, but it seems to be the f

A better way to think about it is that these games are designed for - and paid for by - exactly the very few people who want to spend this much on winning a game. Everybody else gets to free-ride on this, and only pay what they want (mostly

Corporations cannot put me in jail. Corporations cannot (for the most part) just take my money. Other than denying me service, corporations have little power over me, except that which is granted to them by the government itself. Government

I work for others as an employee so that I can buy assets and businesses (e.g. house, 401k) for myself. I think our economy would function very well if more people do this. Many already do.

Yes, but the article doesn't share any numbers that give a sense as to how much water that actually is. How much water does the Central Valley Project normally deliver? What fraction of total water use is that? What fraction of ag wate

1. Place a moratorium on any new water rights. (So no starting new farms with new claims, etc) 2. Identify all existing water rights holders. Every single farm/lot with some kind of water privileges. I'm sure there are thousands.

"50% environmental" - This term is very deceptive. It's basically water that can't be used anyway, and clouds the fact that really agriculture uses 80-90% of the actually available water. It artificially grows the denomi

Great. This saved zero water though. You instead allowed the production of an additional handful of avocados (about 50 gallons each). I hope that was a fair trade.

The best plan for CA to get their water under control is: 1. Fix agriculture water rights to numerical limits, somewhat higher than what is already being used. This will cap water usage and move away from an all-you-can-drink model, but not

The point is that if you add up ALL the swimming pools in California, it totals ~0 water. Not even a rounding error. Farmers measure water use in MILLIONS of ACRE FEET. There is even an acronym for it: MAF. There are rice paddies surroundin

Of COURSE insurance has a negative expectation (not $0) in absolute terms - but this doesn't make it a bad idea! We don't live on expected value - we live on actual, highly variable outcomes. I'm happy to lose expected value

Nothing really, except our preferences. We could ban all plastics tomorrow in the US, if we wanted to. But I don’t think we’d be happy with the quality of life trade-offs.

I don't think your examples are quite what I was talking about. I was talking about where the coins are mined based on how much food you are growing or have harvested. A bit like Chia Coin, but instead of rewards based on disk space, i

It now dawns on me that we can stimulate massive investment and efficiency gains in any domain we want, if only we create a crypto on that domain. E.g. Food. Create a new proof-of-food based crypto. Poof! Literally solved world hunger right
