Lexus has models with a HUD. It was far less useful than I expected. It displays just a compass, digital speedometer, and indicators for cruise control and lane assist.

Unlikely. The specific energy of jet fuel is more than 40 times that of batteries, and I don't see batteries improving by an order of magnitude. A jetpack would need 40 times more battery mass than fuel to produce the same thrust for t

Starting with PostgreSQL 11, B-tree indexes can store additional "non-key" columns in the index. These are kept in the index alongside the sorted key columns. This can avoid expensive sorts in certain query plans. It's not pe

You and I work on very different kinds of projects. I find myself fidgeting and squinting at the database far more when it fails to enforce a schema or provide ACID transactions.

Projects to widen freeways face a similar diminishing return. The most value arises from the new capability. Each lane thereafter does not yield linearly increasing returns.

A method that bills customers is not a “minor part” of the application. This is where automated integration tests can make the most difference. “It should not call the Stripe API if customer has credits remaining.”

One project had tests fail every Saturday and Sunday, near the organization’s fiscal week boundary. Ever since then, I have strived to hard-code all dates in test suites, choosing dates several decades in the future.

Postgres implicitly creates a transaction for any query modifying data outside of one. Transactions in MVCC are relatively cheap. The main resource of contention is a global txid that can disastrously wrap around if autovacuum is disabled.

If a job fails, the connection to the database will timeout. Postgres will rollback the transaction, which releases row locks, freeing a job to be retried. Of course, the database client and server together form a distributed system. The cl

A one-day outage in December can be crippling for retail. I don't doubt that many functions are difficult to failover, but a bare-bones minimum seems straightforward. For example, evidence of delivery is append-only and only needs to b

I think it was only a BGP issue. The DNS servers apparently shared the same peering routers as the rest of Facebook's infrastructure. Everyone focused on DNS because that's the first sign of failure to an end user.

Sounds like automation deployed a configuration update to most of Facebook's peering routers simultaneously. Something similar brought down Google in 2019.
