The bottom line here is that almost everything has a cost. You can pay with money (App.net) or you can pay with freedom (Facebook / Twitter). Is there a third way besides pure charity?

That's the thing though... I interpreted it as being a true statement, but one that cannot be "proven" to be true. I merely possess the strong belief that it is true. Is your argument that the statement could possibly be false? Otherwise we

Ah, but "true" and "proven true" are two different things! I'm sensing an epistemology thread developing...

Wasn't there a Backend-as-a-Service platform released recently for use with Backbone.js? Does anyone remember what that was? Seems like we're seeing a new wave of "front-end only" application frameworks coming out... EDIT: oh yeah, Backlift

It's definitely bad UX. Curtis tries to brush away criticism with his claim that the "kudos" number is "an otherwise meaningless number," but this argument is fatally flawed. Plenty of things that human beings use for social signaling are,

Do you have any examples to back up this statement, other than people getting fired from their jobs for foolishly posting incriminating information online? It seems to me that most of the alarmist reactions to social media are based on comp

I'm kind of amazed at some of the completely unsympathetic responses on here and on the original article. There are two distinct issues I see here: 1) whether or not Moglen's tone/attitude was appropriate, and 2) if his arguments were valid

I prefer to interpret the Singularity as the emergence of a fused global intelligence via the Internet and other networking technologies, rather than some high-powered AI in a box. I can't figure out why this isn't the dominant view.

Has anyone considered the idea that perhaps this "AI" has already arrived in the form of the collective intelligence of the Internet? That perhaps the "Singularity" is simply a shift of scope in terms of consciousness from the individual to

Certainly... if I wanted to create an app where a user could play a virtual "instrument" via the computer keyboard, I would want to trigger a specific audio sample (e.g. a piano note or a drum hit) when the user presses a key. There are alr
