That's a great idea for online services, assuming that they don't have strict validatation ("your mother's maiden name can not contain symbols"). I'm not sure it would work as well with companies who call you though.

Could you buy two cheap VPSs from different suppliers? That way you'd have redundancy and save money?

I agree - at a very low 100MHz per player that's 25 players to a 2.5GHz Xeon core, 100 per CPU, 200 per server. Assume 100,000 players, that's 500 decently spec'd servers plus redundancy, bandwidth, storage, sysadmins, etc.

I don't think your question is answerable - traffic depends on a huge number of factors, many of which are human or random. Lunar phase may very well be a minor factor.

70+ hours a week is a lot of work. Is that all coding, or a lot of managing/client communication, marketing, etc? How are your 12 hours structured, i.e. in 2 hour blocks?

It sounds like they've got enough redundancy that a single drive failure (or even an entire pod) isn't an issue - they use cheap drives and simply swap them out when they fail. I wish Google's hard drive failure analysis [1] included failur

I don't think the physical headphone port would be the concern - it'd be the battery usage, wireless performance, size/weight constraints, all the additional electronics, extra testing, and games having to support multiplayer sound, etc.

I'd love to see a third party service that would deal with having your wallet (or card info) stolen - it would automatically cancel all your cards, sort out billing issues in the meantime, replace all your other cards, etc. Idea for a start

You'd trust your hard drives with USPS? Edit: I'm not implying that USPS is necessarily unreliable, I'm curious to hear if this is common practice.

I treat SO like a technically superior colleague - if I'm stuck with something and have exhausted my other options (documentation, examples, research, SO search), then I'll phrase my question clearly, showing my progress and what I'm stuck

I think it's great - it's not about solving your quick fix, it's about providing future value for googlers.

I think all this drama is a great opportunity for Heroku to bring out a new stack for non-concurrent apps with an intelligent routing mesh (v2.0a, perhaps). If I were you I'd go for another beer with the Heroku engineers and design/prototyp

They're 1U and 2U servers on which I've installed ESXi. I love it - I can run a VM locally then transfer it across, then if I'm travelling I can chuck it onto VMWare Fusion on my laptop.

The main problem with my rack is the noise - I live in a flat and there's nowhere but the living room to put it. I've seen a few noise cancelling designs around, but they're all too expensive. I wonder if I could build a simple noise cancel

I'll throw another vote in for Hover, their site is much nicer to navigate and service were recently very helpful to fix an issue involving email delay (that turned out to be caused by my ISP).

The solar panel idea is interesting, but the problem of storage still remains. What about a global grid that spans the globe, with large solar arrays in the deserts of Australia, North America and South Africa? This way there's always an ar
