Downvoting is a strange thing. If we're trying to understand the article, this is one of the better comments here.

That's not a terrible place to start. "Under most definitions the radii of isolated neutral atoms range between 30 and 300 pm (trillionths of a meter), or between 0.3 and 3 ångströms." https://en.wikipedia.org/

All the article says is that "empty" isn't enough information. If "empty" means "I can put electrons in there", then it takes more binding energy to pack more electrons into the same space. If you want to

I'm not making any excuses for EEs who thought they could design a good synth without involving anyone who understood sound design. My eyes roll at the very idea. (I.e. I've fooled around with it myself, and the results were borin

Sure. I think at most we're saying the same thing. Everybody in electronic music was influenced by Stockhausen. But Stockhausen never got a whole lot of air play. If you listen to his stuff I think it's obvious why.

>I am not sure how you "outline" a synthesizer unless you mean writing a schematic This feels a little extreme. Artists can obviously collaborate with engineers on musical instrument design. The contribution is real even if the

Still, using a modular synth well, which seems to be an extremely demanding art in its own right, is really not the same art as designing a synthesizer.

I'm not sure this is fair. Nobody really knows to what extent psychopathy is inherited vs caused by upbringing. The problem isn't necessarily disbelief in biology, the problem is nobody actually knows the answer. Challenging somet

The terminology is fine. "Why haven't you already done X?" "We were doing Y, we thought it was more important." There is more than one way to refer to this familiar situation. I could say "opportunity cost,&quo

I think it's very difficult. You're looking at losing significant money 9 years out of 10. (Or 20 years out of 20, who knows? It's black swans baby.) So you can only do this with a very small amount of money. How much time ca

It's very different. Dollar cost averaging (if you really follow it) has been very low risk for a very long time. What Taleb says he's doing (betting on events that everybody assumes will not happen) tends to produce (nearly) guar

Sure, BH uses some leverage. But much less than 5:1 unless things have changed a lot in the past few years. [Or unless I'm worse than I realize at figuring out balance sheets, which is certainly possible.]

To do f(10^8) the OP says his/her code would take the matrix and square it about 26 times (2^26 = 67 million and change), then do some more in other ways. That's where the speedup comes from. Are you also doing that? (The mechanis
