Amen to this. I did quite a bit of digging last year to find a dumb TV that did the basics (high panel quality, input switching, HDMI-CEC) well and otherwise just stayed out of the way, and I gave up. A couple of companies have a 'comm

I always took his statement to mean that if something is essential to your business, you should think very carefully about the risks inherent in outsourcing it. The two major exceptions to this are 1. Things which aren't essential to y

I've been a loyal oScope users for ages; I once used it as my front panel in a Halloween robot costume, and it blew people's minds that they could talk to me and have it show up on my 'belly screen'. A very useful tool i

Minor error in this post: 'IN' doesn't refer to the answer's inclusion in the given DNS type -- it's a short form of Internet, and is meant to denote the address family being returned (the field is called 'CLAS

> How is Uber not in everybody's best interests? Poor and elderly people, for a start. Spend a bit of time by the entrance to a major hospital and observe how the other half uses taxis as a lifeline; you might just change your tune.

Shameless plug to add to the list: I built and currently use a tool called 'hawk' for handling ad-hoc deployments to testers. It's (in my opinion, anyway) simpler than the alternatives, is command line driven and configured from within your

I lost my dad last week to this exact same event. My parents live in the country, and my elderly mother didn't have the training (or lack of panic) to attempt CPR. Although members of the local volunteer fire department were on site within

Back in the (2.1.x) day it seemed like I was running ac kernels more often than not. Nowadays though, I've been away from the kernel world for so long that I don't even know how big of a deal this is. Anyone care to chime in?

I'd love to hear more about the 'Dropbox clone' you're using here. The idea of keeping a VPS around as my own private cloud is something I've been thinking about for a while; I'm very interested to learn from someone who's already done it.

Of course -- the reality of even the simplest CPU is obviously much, much more complex than what I described above. The analogy is really only helpful as a bridge between the world of theory, and the CPU as it exists in the world.

Honestly, my answer to this came about many years after living through a very theoretical CS undergrad, by way of a chapter in Charles Petzold's book, 'Code' (of all things. I originally bought the book for my dad to help him understand 'wh
