Yes, we have our own user validation system (a challenge/response protocol). We actually validate you on the pageforest.com domain, and then transfer a session cookie to your application - so your app never sees the user password/secret. I

Isn't it amazing that we can be talking about "when" monetiization rolls around after Twitter has past 175 million users?

FTI - here's the Twitter developer group post: http://groups.google.com/group/twitter-development-talk/brow... It seems stronger than merely a "recommendation" to me. They flatly state that new apps may not replicate the mainstream Twitt

Isn't this exactly what Twitter said they DON'T want to see (replacement clients using the Twitter API). Is TweetDeck just "grandfathered in"?

But there is no evidence to show any sort of causal cross over between the two. You can wave your hands, and say that "obviously" people didn't understand X until we had Y - but there is no historical reference being made to support this c

There are an increasing class of mobile application that don't need native support at all - they just want to have platform-conforming UI. jQuery mobile, JQTouch, and Sencha Touch are examples of these platforms that require only HTML + Ja

Reminds me of Wired magazine - made by designers so disdainful of their readers that they decide to make it unreadable (like setting pink text on a green background). When I see a site like this I get the message - GO AWAY - and comply.

Does HN have an independent revenue model? Is there enough revenue to support hiring editors here? Arn'te we all just free riding on PG's beneficence?

Fair enough. I was just a bit surprised by the effusive comments on this thread when my experience was quite the opposite. For my money, I've much more enjoyed the writings of Martin Gardner, or Bill Bryson.

Why did you find Chaos to be wonderful? I found many inaccuracies when I read it. Seemed more like a fluff piece designed to ride a popular wave about the topic at the time it came out.

I didn't like Chaos or Feynman - and haven't read Gleick since. I find his type of popular science writing to be imprecise and even inaccurate.

The key benefit can be had with monkey patching as well: - Publishing a new solution and making it available. The packaging is not ideal, as setup and configuration of the lib+patch will not be as simple as pulling a modified lib. But thin

I will generally have an "imports" type line at the top of my module, and then use the abbreviated name in the code. This is similar to Python's "from module import name" pattern. var library = namespace.com.foo.bar.baz; ...

In the age of git and hg, why is a fork such a big deal? Code can still flow fluidly between multiple forks of a project with almost no friction. Some amount of forking is probably healthy in the long run, allowing a different part of the
