Author here: I actually added SnapRAID to the article a while back due to some of my beta testers singing its praises. I haven't used it myself, but I'm glad it's saved your data!

FreeNAS was BSD based (but I've been too chicken to migrate to True as after reading stuff in the subreddit). The GUI _is_ pretty slick.

That's really interesting: it's pretty apparent in most images when an 8x8 block is borked. It could just randomly flip bits to minimize entropy in both his and lightness channels.

Great question: it's for expandability. If you run RAID-1 in a 2-slot NAS, and you run out of space, you've got two options: 1) buy another NAS 2) move off of RAID, and have 2 distinct volumes. You'll have twice the storage,

I've found a discouraging amount of bit rot in my older (15+ year old) magnetic media. I think if you can pull a file off of magnetic media that's older than 10 years old, you should should be feeling lucky. Move the files to a ne

At least for your photos, you probably want to use Google Takeout. Rclone is wonderful, but Google's photo api strips off GPS tags from all your files. PhotoStructure will dedupe your Google Takeout, FWIW.
