It's possible that Airbnb has their own, separate license with Facebook. It's also possible that they decided they could absorb the cost of a countersuit if they ever sue Facebook over a patent. I don't think speculating abou

Hyperbole, yes. Hyperbole is what's ruining the world today. Metaphors if they're really bad, sculpting intuition that's off by orders of magnitude.

I've often thought Opera should have stayed commercial. They probably would have still maintained 1% market share, but with a cool half-billion in revenue keeping it the browser worth paying for. I wonder if it's too late for Viva

The only way it would help is if we had some other way to rule out asteroid impact ejecta but not probe contamination. So we'd have: 1) Life on Enceladus that's 2) genetically indistinguishable from Earth life, which 3) we know di

If we find life on Enceladus that looks just like Earth life, the null hypothesis is that it came from Earth. That won't change, whether we crash a probe there or not. Finding extant life anywhere beyond Earth would still be a paradigm

It seems pretty unlikely that Earth life could accidentally seed any moon of Saturn, and extremely unlikely that it could out-compete life that's been adapting to that environment for eons. As in, even less likely than Earth's sur

Yes, to clarify, I was using `setTargetAtTime` to ramp the volume, but it was still clicking in Firefox without an extra hack. At the time I found a bug report that appeared to point to the cause (something related to internal audio buffers

There were no sound files. I used an oscillator and changed the gain with `setTargetAtTime` to briefly fade in and out. That should prevent any clicking, but in Firefox it required an excessive amount of time.

I tried making a simple Morse code trainer using the Web Audio API, which seemed perfectly suited to the task, but I ran into two major problems: 1. Firefox always clicks when starting and stopping each tone. I think that's due to a lo

Building a second HQ is horizontal scaling unless they plan to consolidate at the new location and continue vertical scaling from there. It sounds like they're actually distributing the HQ across two locations, not just building a spec

Ethics is stuck between a rock and a hard place if nations collapse because they're not disregarding ethics enough, as the previous comment suggests. (I'm disputing the premise.)

Different ethics != not caring about ethics. And if not caring about ethics were the key to winning the nation-state game, the ethical response would be to tear it all down ASAP, which is usually quite unethical in practice.

Is that really true? How many people in a 50,000-person campus ever even make eye contact, much less work together in a way that requires physical proximity?
