Users express what they want, sure. But it's up to the developer to gather users' wants and analyze them to search for the reasoning behind the wants. That's the closest I've been able to come to learning what users want -- they often can't

I haven't read through many of these here yet, but surely its advice wouldn't hurt. Doesn't look too much like your ordinary fluffy-self-help from my initial glances. In some respects, hacking more happiness out of life might be one of the

If space isn't a concern, and you're using e-mail verification, I'd set it to allow however long the RFC allows for... invalid addresses would be found through the verification e-mail, rather than an arbitrary length constraint. That said,

Going without comments can be beneficial, I agree. But one issue: If you don't enable comments or trackbacks, how is your audience expected to follow the discussion?

Fascinating... though I now feel like an old assembly programmer saying things like "In my day, we wrote Javascript by hand, and it only consumed suchandsuch memory and was blazing fast... now you with your newfangled GUI builders..."

Then you'd see something different every time you looked over to find your application. Consistency seems like something worth keeping. A large app icon with a tiny preview might work, but that's obviously not much better/different than the

The main issue with that solution: Each application no longer looks the same. In OS X, Mail would look a lot like iTunes, Word, TextMate -- because they're all predominantly white-background with black text. The taskbar/dock would soon look

Interesting analysis. Have any of you pair programmed? Did you find it as useful as the author of this article did?

Those are some very substantial speed improvements. Great to see, especially since this was just a point release.

Perhaps the most important way to deal with long forms: Make them shorter. See if you really need to collect all of that information. Make sure you're using the most efficient and intuitive form controls for the task at hand.

Interesting that Guido didn't want to have an explicit "self" variable initially. Turned out to be a good idea in retrospect, in terms of clarity. When I head back to C/C++ code, I often find myself adding "this->" all over the place ou

I don't read Reddit myself, but for those who do, $1.99 shouldn't be a deal-breaker. People will plunk down two bucks in an instant on the app store if they find something cool that would enhance their experience. (And good on them; if ever

Firefox appeared at a great time in the browser wars, but it has shown its age. Its UI paradigm (cross-platform XUL) gives it a disadvantage in speed and size for individual platforms, which is unfortunate. It seems like FF 3.1 will show ma

It's too bad that the US didn't switch to the metric system and A4 paper. It isn't so much about imperial vs. metric (though the metric system's design feels more natural); but it would be nice to have a worldwide standard format.

Use what performs the best. If that's Sizzle, fine; if not, seriously consider whether it remains in your library's best interest to use an inferior library when a better open source one could be used instead. If problems arise, you could a
