I agree there is a virtue to living within ones means. Having as small a 'footprint' as possible - carbon or otherwise. I probably first entertained this idea after reading translations of Buddhist texts or things like Merton's "Saying of t

Yes, yes, yes. I am seen as an oddity (family friends coworkers) for choosing public transit and walking over using a car. It seems like such insanity to clog the streets and air with car traffic like we do.

Yes but I also think that in some cultures people sing more and informally. ot just education but also general attitudes towards singing. For me growing up the only time I would sing would be in church - the essence of drudgery. Working and

Yes but there is more nuance here. Only a few dog breeds are potentially dangerous. Look at the CDC stats (link below) over 20 years for fatal dog attacks and there are a relatively few breeds. In fact, looking at the data, if you lump 'pit

Nice link - thanks for that. (the link to the article is broken but easy to find) Another interesting question is to look at the relationship of atheism and belief. Actually science does not approach real atheism - it never exceeds agnostic

Good point - and to further your definition of dialectical - it is not simple opposition of two forces that leads to a 3rd path (I think that is often referred to as Aristotelian dialectic). The critical theory dialectic you refer to is the

I, myself, am not a Socialist I tend to vote 3rd party because I believe Nader's basic idea that there is no difference between the two dominant parties - they just serve different corporate interests. But I am in no way a committed Marxist

Yes - I agree this felt like flame-bait. I found the absence of any references to Debian odd. I say that because for me the choice among Linux distributions is largely a choice of what kind of package management you want to use. One thing I

The following doent work on a Windows system and it has been a few years since I have used MacOS - so I do not remember if you can do this. On any of the *nixes that I have used (Debian, NetBSD) there is a similar 'desktop clearing' trick.

I love these systems. The main branch of the New York Public Library had (still has?) a nice shiny brass system in the research room. You filled out a request on a little card and the librarian would put it into a metal canister and send it
