The phrase "worse is better" was coined precisely to explain the success of C, and I consider that paper required reading for entering this discussion.

Not just AOT; you can also easily compile new functions at runtime, and then even serialize the entire program's state, including JIT-compiled functions, into a new compiled image that starts instantly.

I've always thought of Derrida as some kind of shaman poet sorcerer who uses philosophy as the material for secretive experiments, which makes me not so upset when I can't understand him.

Same with Emacs keyboard macros. I use them very often to do similar things to many lines. Usually they involve some combination of search to move the cursor, word-based movement, cut and paste, and insertion. It's such a great feeling

GHC has the `IsList` type class which basically allows overloading the list syntax to create any other sequential container. It still uses linked lists as an intermediate representation (the type class consists of a function `fromList :: [a

Do you think the value of BTC tomorrow will probably be nonzero? If so, you are participating in the faith, right? Monetary value may be an illusion, but if offer you some bitcoin at half the market price, you'd be quite irrational to

A few times I've wanted to make a script to download all those highlights into a text file, but I've never bothered... would still be really nice though.

For the record, you can also write Lambda programs in C, Haskell, Rust, Ocaml, Go, or basically whatever compiled language you want, as long as you can manage to produce a binary whose dynamically linked library paths are compatible with Am

Even in Haskell, writing state is as easy as += or <- and this is used in nearly every actual program. A cryptocurrency implementation like this doesn't need a language that makes state impossible. It needs static analysis, model ch

> About your wider point: you seem to put a lot of importance on societal roles ("expected to", "narratives"), and I don't think much of this (if at all) is caused by society rather than self-directed. Why do you

There's something to be said for just reading manuals. Like, I can mess around with Gimp and get basic stuff done, but I bet if I read a book or manual I would pick on fundamental things that would help me really learn to master the to

I think I've been talking casually about "coding" HTML or CSS for many years. To me the word can mean any process of converting your ideas into "computer codes". However, if someone says "I'm a coder"

There are downsides to abstraction, too. The result of the urge of explicitly abstract every pattern can end up being a brittle network of dependencies. It can become really hard to adapt the formal abstractions to small requirement changes
