I thought the Linux kernel had a strong “don’t break userspace” attitude, but it was a free for all in kernel space. If you’re developing kernel modules or have custom hardware with drivers, I could see having a backported kernel as being a

Right, but you’re not actually automatically migrating a Postgres 13 program to Postgres 15 in a running container. That was what I first thought when I read the title. You’re using the work “upgrade” differently than how I normally think

This is a very confusing title and project at first glance. It took me a minute to figure out what you’re doing… But just to be clear — the point of this is to migrate an existing Postgres DB from the original version to a newer version? Th

Hindsight being 20/20, using tugs would have been the cheaper option here. My guess is that there is now a different cost/benefit calculation for super large container ships traversing the canal during high wind conditions. Or at

How far away does LIDAR work? These are huge ships, pretty far from the banks, and the required positions within the channel locations would vary heavily throughout the trip (and probably even change day to day). From the report though, you

I think there are a lot of take home messages here that are applicable to many different situations. 1) Have a plan and try to stick to it. Rapid changes (hard port/hard starboard) without having a heading is dangerous. 2) Relying on l

I'd suspect the issue would be with precision. GPS, et al. are good, but at what resolution do you really need it to be? Is 1m accuracy enough? 1m at what point on the ship? And do you want to install that equipment on each ship traver

Is end to end encryption even beneficial in a public broadcast medium? I mean, you’d need to send the encryption key as part of the broadcast. There isn’t an out of band channel to transmit a key, so how could this even work in a secure way

I get it. Google has a lot of killed/closed products. But that’s kind of their MO. They try a lot of things. Sometimes they work (Gmail was an experiment at one point), but they often don’t. Making fun of their killed products is a fav

I thought it was a sign of who paid for the feature. I have no insight as to whether or not this is true, but leaving out S3 made me assume either Google or Microsoft (or a third party heavily tied to one of these clouds) paid for this to b

Java JAR files are similar, but reversed. You can add anything you want to the beginning of the JAR file (or is it any ZIP file?) so long as it doesn't include the Zip file header "PK". So, I use this to prepend a bash scri

I think the point is that this is a self-fulfilling prophesy. There isn't much airplay, which makes the industry invest less in women artists, which in turn means there are fewer songs by women available to play, thus less airtime. I w

I’m going to take a guess that the rationale is file locking. If you have three separate processes using three separate database files, you can write all the data you want, as fast as you can, without worrying about file locking. SQLite can
