More like we can’t name things (eg. gene names) the way scientists want because of needing to work with the data in Excel. So instead of OCT4 we get a different name because Excel mangled the name into a date for decades. Excel is still the

I’m trying to think about what kind of tools would benefit from such an option… An obvious first tool would be “ls” to produce an easier to parse output. From there, maybe a “grep” to search fields and “sort” to sort by fields. I guess I ca

While I think that ASCII including a specific record delimiter character (0x1E) that isn’t used is a missed opportunity, I actually think the lack of a set interchange format is a benefit. No format will work for everyone and if there was o

There are some terminals that can display inline images, but those features aren’t commonly used. Why? Text works. Text is the lowest common denominator for working with data. This is why terminals are still primarily text based. This is al

It’s really sad that we all basically have to design code and data fields around the behavior tools like Excel. R will do the same thing for numeric fields (strip leading 0s), so it’s not just Excel here. But in the R case, you rarely read&

Has there been any indication of who was behind the attack? Notoriety usually requires knowing who was responsible first. But at this scale, I doubt someone is trying to do this just for the fun of it.

This seems to discuss roads and cities… not stairs in a tower. If the direction of the stairs was so important, why isn’t that mentioned? Either is was very obvious to the authors (so not included), or not thought to be an important factor.

As soon as I read the description, that was my guess too. It was such a simple game and I spent a lot of time playing it. If you wanted to be patient, it was almost impossible to lose. But if you hurried, it was anlmost impossible to win.

Looks like a few places are blowing embargoes (or at least the release time wasn't well coordinated). From the original Farnell email links, products aren't available to purchase yet (the links go to the RPi4 landing page). From:

Design operates within the contexts of a system. A perfectly viable design can be made bad by a change in the system for which it was designed. Does this current design require disabling SIP? Then I don’t think it is worth my effort to use

I don’t think that’s right. As soon as developers have other options for distribution (that is cheaper), that’s what they will use. Look at Epic for an example. I used to play Fortnite with my kids on my iPad, but can’t anymore. So, my choi

Technical limitations aren’t excuses for a bad design. If it’s not a good design due to a technical limit, the answer isn’t to sacrifice security for functionality. If it really isn’t technically possible (which I think you might be able to
