Or where locality is critical. Like if you have a game that hits peak traffic at different times throughout the day in different regions. So, a company may not want to own hardware in multiple regions, when they would only be at peak usage

I think one business argument for cloud is capital expenses vs operational expenses. If you’re (over) paying for cloud resources vs an in house option (or colo), those are numbers that are a straight expense. When you own hardware, those a

I think of it as second mover advantage. The US basically has the first system that worked. And in terms of the expectations of the 1960s, it works really well. But, because it works “good enough” there is very little incentive to make it w

And that’s why I tend to use tab delimited files more… when viewed with invisible characters shown, it’s pretty clear to read/write separate fields and have an easier to parse format. This, of course, assumes that your input doesn’t in

I’m pretty sure those used to exist. But when looking for a picture to back up my (likely flawed) memory, Google helpfully told me that you can get a record separator character by hitting Ctrl-^ (caret). Who knew?

This is actually one of the use cases the authors discuss in their paper. Sending mixed plastics through this process to extract the PET/PBT containing bits, and send the rest along their way.

Seems like a good system, but it will only work if Amazon is the one doing the final delivery… In cases like this where it is third party (in this case FedEx), there’s no way to manage that.

Was Ampere going bankrupt though? I think the fear is that if Oracle was the purchaser, then that would be good for Oracle, but not necessarily the rest of the ARM ecosystem. Given Softbank’s ARM investment, it is in their interest to try t

You see how this is worse, right? If automatic collision avoidance doesn’t work, why would you expect FSD to do better? (Or more to the point - why would a prospective buyer think so?) And if collision avoidance doesn’t work better, then wh

True, but for this purpose, it's "blacker" than a typical LED backlit TV. For a Youtube / DIY project ... I think the description is fine.

Twin studies can help control for things like genetics and environmental factors in childhood (exposures, socio-economic factors, etc). They can't control for lifestyle choices made by adults. So, if a person has tattoos, are they more

Are people who have tattoos more likely to want to have their skin exposed to the sun (to show off the tattoos)? That seems like a reasonable association, but it's probably dependent upon tattoo location.

I’m a bit curious about what the purpose of this is… PCR machines in and of themselves don’t have an output. However, this is about a specific real-time PCR machine, which does have a digital output. It is a simple mistake, but is an import

This looks like a good exploratory project! One thing I’d add to the readme is an example of how you’d use the database in an example application. From the docs, it’s clear that this isn’t a sql database (yet?), so it would be good to have

I have no specialized knowledge (just a ZFS user for over a decade). I suspect the reason is that in addition to files, ZFS will also allow you to create volumes. These volumes act like block devices, so if you want to dedup them, you need

This is a technical solution to a people problem. My reading is that the city doesn’t want to give up this information. If that’s the case, a technical solution wouldn’t work, no matter how easy it is. And given that this has already gone t

That’s not a bad analogy. WYSIWYG is great for almost all use cases. It let people without training in typesetting produce well formatted content quickly. It’s fast and easy. But, sometimes it doesn’t work. Or produces formatting that isn’t
