Slightly off-topic, but I wanted to share what a joy it was to use VitePress to build this new documentation site. We already use Vite for Plot development: instant hot module reloading is fantastic for iterating on tests as you can instant

We haven’t implemented it yet, but that’s what we’re working on right now! There’s a PR up here (we just took a small break to focus on TypeScript declarations and then the new documentation website): https://github.com/obse

Here’s an example using D3 to add interactive tooltips to Plot: https://observablehq.com/@mkfreeman/plot-tooltip Here’s one that lets you click on a region in a line chart to select it: https://observablehq.

Thanks, and great questions! I like having multiple tools that make different design trade-offs. There’s no “one ring to rule them all.” For analysis I like to start with a high-level tool so that I can explore quickly and see if the data i

I love Graphviz! It’s in the Observable standard library as the dot tagged template literal, powered by Viz.js. https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/dot Here’s a recent example where I used it to figure out why certa

Plot generates SVG. There’s a variety of tools you can use to convert SVG to PDF. Plot is intended to be used on the web so I don’t think we’ll add direct to PDF rendering. (Though it’s possible that Observable might support it — Observable

We (and by we I really mean my inimitable collaborator Philippe Rivière) have started prototyping plugins for rendering geographic shapes using D3 projections, so I expect Plot would be able to support this fairly soon. Then you can use som

Thanks for the suggestion. We will be adding more examples soon (both interactive inputs driving plots, and interactive plots driving outputs). Here’s one with a search box: https://observablehq.com/@mbostock/us-covid-v

Most of the time. Unless you want or need a bespoke visualization, Plot will let you construct a meaningful plot with much less time and effort. (That said, Plot is brand new and still under development, so it might not yet have the specifi

Yes, in a variety of ways. All marks currently support native tooltips (the title channel), and in the near future we’ll be releasing more interactions that you can compose into the chart, e.g. for brushing or pointing. As I mentioned in an

Yep, transforms in Plot are totally optional — you can do them outside of plotting if it’s more convenient for you, say using Arquero, and it tends to be efficient since you can supply Plot with columnar data. But having transforms integrat

We’ve been developing Observable Plot for a while now, and I’m thrilled to finally have it out in the public. Feel free to ask me any questions! Or share your plots on Observable and I can make suggestions. ;)

That’s also one of my favorite examples, but for sentimental reasons: it was the first time I met Shan Carter, who came to my talk on D3’s force layout. This eventually led to me working for The New York Times, and then some years later, Sh

The changes between v4 and v5 are tiny (adopting promises in d3-fetch instead of callbacks). The changes between v5 and v6 are also largely backwards-compatible, so hopefully your upgrade will be painless. A migration guide is here: https:

D3 has been written in ES modules since the beginning of 2016 when we adopted Rollup for bundling. The difference now is that we’re adopting ES2015 language features that can’t be transpiled (namely for-of). We didn’t get around to it for 6

Collections (Map and Set) and iterables; the latter practically requires for-of syntax and so can’t be supported in older browsers. d3.group and d3.rollup are much more enjoyable to use than d3.nest.
