Right; I ported it from the Dart implementation, not from the generated JavaScript.

Yep. Typed arrays don't have a built-in sort method, and even the built-in array.sort is extremely slow. I ported Dart's dual-pivot quicksort implementation, which reduced the time to sort 1M floats from ~2.5s to ~350ms (timed in Node v0.6.

Apologies; I wasn't aware of the Tesseract OCR project until very recently, and then I hoped there would not be much harm given that the two projects are so unrelated. (The name "Tesseract" was the natural progression from "Square" and "Cub

Nice; animated transitions are great for maintaining continuity when data is changing. Handling changes in the y-scale can be another source of distraction, so it's nice if you're able to fix the domain (as [0,1] in your example). In Januar

Quite the opposite. With D3 you control the structure of the DOM (hence data-driven documents) directly. Data-driven refers to the declarative method in which you generate or update the document from data, not the end result. Unlike Raphaël

I forgot to include both weights of the Yanone Kaffeesatz web font (400 and 700), which was causing rendering problems on some browsers. Try it again now? Sorry for the inconvenience.

The cause of the instability appears to be the box-shadow (or possibly the -webkit-transform) on all 151 slides. I've disabled those features for iOS now, and it appears to be stable.

The Verlet integration is just this part here: https://github.com/mbostock/d3/blob/master/src/layout/force.... The rest of the function is calculating default forces and constraints for graph layout; these can be disabled, and thanks to t

Nice; it's lovely how position Verlet lets you simulate geometric constraints so naturally. If you're interested in learning more, I recommend Thomas Jakobsen's "Advanced Character Physics" (I could only find a PDF link): http://www.pagine

This is a nice example of the "quantified self", and I wonder if there's a potential for insight regarding productivity. For example, the weekly patterns are apparent: the weekends aren't labeled, but you can see repeating density patterns

This is a truly impressive implementation, based on previous work by Jonathan Feinberg [1]. The display uses SVG, but the character outlines are computed by canvas bitmaps. Then, Jason implemented hierarchical bounding boxes to accelerate t

I like the generality of the defer/await concepts of TameJs (and by extension, iced coffee). But I was curious if these concepts could be used without code generation, as in Async.js. So I came up with Queue.js: https://github.com/mbostock

If you edit the algorithm in the textarea, it will automatically refresh the visualization. Edit: I added a checkbox to control the auto-refresh behavior.

The aspect ratio is also problematic with taller windows; best practice is to bank to 45º: http://vis.berkeley.edu/papers/banking/ It's hard to pick the right aspect ratio without knowing the data beforehand, but you could make some reaso

I did this same experiment with D3 (animating the outline-color and background-color for 1s with ease-in-out), and I got performance nearly identical to CSS. http://bl.ocks.org/d/1616423/ A lot of this gain is likely from using requestAni

Point taken; I'll keep this in mind in future examples. I find it extremely tempting to write JavaScript as compact as possible, sometimes at the expense of readability. Writing pedagogical code requires a slightly different mindset.

The angle of the lines encodes the value of the card. The lowest-value cards lean left, and the highest-value cards lean right. The in-order deck, therefore, neatly fans from left-to-right. In the shuffled deck the values are in random orde

Agreed. Given DirectX and Direct3D, MS is unlikely to support a derivative of OpenGL. That may eventually change if WebGL becomes widely adopted, forcing their hand, but current lack of support in IE9+ is a major inhibition to adoption. I d
