This. I also like writing, but I love your description of technical writing as a (sort of) competition. Thanks!

No longer active, but the archives of "The dice tower" gave me lots of joy back in the day (until they changed the format - around 2017, I guess - I liked the previous one better).

Agreed, data entry in GnuCash (back when I used it, about 10 years ago probably) was a pleasure. Very streamlined experience. Nowadays I use ledger with Emacs, so it's hard to beat that, of course.

You're 100% correct. My ledger git repo has 1300+ commits (about 0.8 per day on average).

I do the same (ledger, not GnuCash). A few minutes each day. I used to outsource (part of) the work to my daughter when she was ~8yo (and paid her for that) to teach her that work is where you get money from.

I think any accounting software can (should?) support that. Ledger-cli certainly does. (I used GnuCash for several years and then moved to ledger.)

Shameless plug: some time ago I wrote a booklet [0] about principles of accounting with examples in Ledger [1], aimed at personal/home finance (as opposed to corporate finance). [0] https://leanpub.com/personal-accoun

Very, very, very interesting. Will take a look. Though part of me just wants to say "Nice, you've just reinvented Emacs Org-mode". Of course, Org-mode probably isn't for everyone. Good luck with this project!

A very nice list. I looked for vamoose , and was not disappointed. Then I looked for petrichor (see e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34147465 ) and suddenly I was... What it lacks is some context/flavor.

Speed is not the only thing `emacsclient` addresses. When your $EDITOR is `emacsclient`, the newly spawned frame will share state (kill ring, buffer list etc.) with your Emacs server. This might be helpful e.g. when you (like me) are a he

Interesting. I love LotR the books, but I dislike the movies a lot - maybe they are good as "standalone" films, but they change so much important stuff from the books that they were a very sore disappointment for me.

This is a very good point. On the literature side, Harry Potter seems to have attained this critical mass, too. One of my daughter's school friends was shocked that she hasn't read it, and lent her the first book. She read it,
