Near me, the price has varied greatly in the last few months by what you buy and when, I assume because the original driver is supply-line woes at the processors. Produce and canned stuff have been weird too, but meat especially was the mo

The American public want what the TV tells them to want. Today it's Ukraine, but tomorrow nobody will be able to find Europe on a map.

I mean, it comes down to how much you trust your HR department to treat you as a human. If you work someplace where that kind of rapport is normal, then great! But that's not been my experience.

The part I don't understand is, where did the stranger-danger thing come from? Was it an early reaction to institutional sexual abuse that was just becoming well-known? Was it a culture-war thing where racism was socially unacceptabl

I think that's a consequence of reruns. My parents use Gilligan's Island or Columbo as background noise, because they know how they all go. The writers intended for each episode to be the focus of the room's attention, but

My view is that if your employer is telling you to come to Jesus, the productive relationship is already gone. Work isn't a marriage or a family; if it's not working, you don't have to take extraordinary measures to preserve

> We spend a lot more time on social media than we did watching the TV. Is this actually true? When I was a kid, the amount of TV time was something of a moral panic; I'd have a hard time believing there were many more hours in t

The PIP thing varies. Some companies just use them as a risk reducing tool to fire people, but a few really believe in them and will keep employees who've gone through them. I take a dim view of that, personally, just because it ends

No, good God no! There are a ton of conservative voters who loathed the Dubya administration, and I'm one of them. But you have to understand, that's what created Trump, especially as Democrats doubled down on social issues.

I guess trying to explain how friendship happens seems weird to me? It's obvious enough as it's happening that being forced to spend time together (as with school) generates friendships. Maybe I'm being too critical.

If those were the only criteria, making friends would be easy. People have more built-in tribalism at the very least; the article reads like a '50s science fiction novel about robots making friends.

The real problem in this case is that an abusive ex has way more leverage than before. We can't say "stop providing that leverage", because it's victim-blaming, but those backward social norms were there for a reason.
