Developers are not investors. They borrow money to build and hope to sell at a profit. It’s just like a new car dealership. The “inventory” isn’t owned by the builder or lot, it’s owned by the bank. The builder pays interest, taxes, insuran

Completely agree. When I went to Yosemite the POS was down and they just opened the gate. The resources needed to run the admission system could be better spent elsewhere.

To be fair they did say that when contributing to a shared project they follow the prevailing standard. I don’t see the harm in following this for your own passion projects. You aren’t doing it for the world, you’re doing it for yourself.

I think this is a great example of a justice system working as intended. The statistical evidence alone likely would not have convicted her, but it could have exonerated or cast doubt on her being the perpetrator. It did not, for reasons wh

Not sure why you are downvoted, because this is spot on. You can tell many people on HN nave never worked in an enterprise environment. As a developer I would love to have a Linux laptop, but a Mac is as close as I can get. Companies do not

The top line numbers are so cooked. We are losing full time jobs in well paying sectors and adding part time jobs in hospitality. That’s not the big win that it seems. Just yesterday El-Erian wrote a column casting doubt on the soft landing

First stinkbugs now this. I remember first seeing them in PA a decade ago. Now they are everywhere in Ohio. People joke it is the new state bird.

The evidence would suggest that people making a median income are up to their eyeballs in debt, particularly credit card debt, and have very little hope of their situation improving in the future.

Exactly. This is not controversial or very hard to understand. By the time you pay the taxes on your income, health insurance, maybe fund your 401k, pay an average mortgage, pay for insurance, power, other utilities, etc. I won't even

Same experience. The medical system is a reflection of pop parenting culture or vice versa. Everyone was so gung ho on breastfeeding, but when the milk didn’t come in and our son wasn’t interested in a dry breast the only advice given was “

It only takes a small nudge in the economy to force a lot of real estate back on to the market. A small uptick in unemployment could force the number of homes on the market to double or triple in certain areas.

The role of shame and self respect as a social regulator has been severely diminished. Going out in public is sadly like going to a circus side show nowadays. Everything is ugly and people are very crass. Oh well, better get used to it, it’
