I tend to be pretty skeptical in general, so grain of salt may be required here, but I sense some irony that the Chinese government has a significant stake in Lenovo. https://easytechsolver.com/who-is-lenovo-owned-by/

I'm really not understanding this. Doesn't the typical path for advanced technology making it into the hands of civilians start with military applications and end with it being modified for civilian use? If the Pentagon wants Anth

"the most valuable and important thing you can learn will be to think critically and communicate well." I have heard some form this advice for over 30 years. Not one single penny I have earned in my career came from my critical th

I prefer pragmatism over ontology. The word "is" complicates discussions in unproductive ways. Good read though. Thinking about C as not just a language but also a protocol is a different perspective that is useful for the mental

I'm Not sure that I agree that it is automatically safer to prefer apt or dnf, and I'm definitely sure that it is not safer to prefer npm. Safety is about managing risk. One element of managing risk is evaluating trust. I'm t

Go write a floating point package, by yourself (no AI assistance), from scratch. Then you will understand.

Aah okay - I remember it being proposed, but perhaps I wrongly assumed it had shipped. I do wonder sometimes if Apple is doing anything that we aren't privy to with photos that end up in iCloud.

This is my attempt to answer your question about "what kind of algorithm can you implement to detect something dangerous". Disclaimer though, I agree that the proposed regulation is way too broad and will have unintended consequen

Thank you for this comment! I knew it was something like this. I've been using it in the VSCode terminal, but you're right, the ANSI terminal just doesn't work. I wasn't quite sure why!

Living without it isn't hard IMO. It's more of a convenience. Most of the servers I ever login to only have one non-root user anyway. When I need root, I switch to root.

You do realize that obsessing over words like that is a pretty major part of what programming and computer science is right? Linguistics is highly intertwined with computer science.

If I set aside for a moment, and for the sake of argument, the fact that we all have to earn a living, why would anyone want a job where you distill a bunch of input from those "below you" and relay it to those "above you&quo

See it starts with gender, and if (user.gender === "Female") user.age = 29. After that, the algorithm gets very complex and becomes a black box. I'm sure they spent billions training it.

Don't mistake my comment for an excuse not to use the technology. Saying that the externalities of developing AI don't matter in the long run legitimizes the hyperbole that fuels irrational investment. Not to mention the profound

This is content that the LLMs will, probably already have, suck up and incorporate into their corpus. Saying that it doesn't matter if the stock market crashes because in the long run, the technology will create more economic value to

My first go at this I got a C- for sending mixed/inconsistent signals to Gary by at first agreeing to his request, but then saying no to a follow-up request. I wish there was a bit more context about the overall status of the project -

I beg to differ on the getting paid to think part. I once had a software job at a financial institution that shall remain nameless, where thinking was actively discouraged by managers. You get paid to do what the customer wants.

I thought non-profit was a potential haven as well. Turns out the "office politics" inside non-profits is often worse than in for-profit companies.

It is possible for a business to pay someone for the parts they don't like even when the parts they don't like do not contribute to profit or financial success in some way. This is not only demoralizing, it is usually boring, and

Apparently coons used to be quite a popular delicacy in the south once upon a time. Dogs are predators, which is a very primal reason I could never imagine eating one. I've eaten bear, and it tasted terrible. Come to think of it, every
