"Most of the employees I come into contact with have jobs that could be automated with a few days or weeks of programmer effort." After looking at some of the business processes at my company I am not so sure about this anymore. T

" any admission of guilt is only to be considered as part of evidence in a case." This makes sense to me. Someone confessing to a crime is certainly a strong indicator they did it but it's not 100%.

If everything is operated through the touch screen you lose a lot when the screen fails. With knobs only the function of the knob fails.

That knowledge is still valuable for example in figuring out why a WPF app doesn’t update its Ui. We have more abstractions today but under the hood it’s still the same.

I agree. I am a little worried that if something like 9/11 happened again he may do something impulsive that may spiral out of control.

I remember when I was contractor I had to get some screens from another building to kick off the project. They didn't have badges, just somebody at reception. I walked in, took screens almost $30000 worth, carted them out and left. Thi

We definitely don't want to get into another situation like after 9/11 when some people did everything they could to connect Iraq to 9/11 so they could invade. Not sure if there are people right now who are hellbent to go to

That’s my impression too. I would expect more handcrafted code on embedded systems and you need more awareness of computational complexity and memory needs.

Germany has a police union that sometimes makes public statements but overall they don’t seem to have much power. I think the US is suffering from the disadvantages of decentralization. Local police forces have much more freedom and get awa

"VB6 to VB.NET is not a successive version of a .NET tool, front-end or otherwise." Correct. But VB6 was the main tool for quick UI development before Winforms took that place. Things that would have been written with VB6 would be

VB.NET has only superficial similarity with VB6. If you move from VB6 to VB.NET you have to rewrite the whole thing so you may as well go to C#. that's the problem with the .NET front-end tools in general. They have no transition path

I think steam engines prototyped a lot of the needed technology like lubrication, manufacturing of precision shafts and heat resistance which then could be applied to the gas engine.

UWP is getting better but last time I looked it still had some weird restrictions. For many things WPF is still your best bet because you can be pretty confident that you will be able to do what you need to do.

On Windows you often can't even predict if you need admin rights for something. I have had plenty of cases when I tried something and couldn't get the f...ing thing to work. Then try with admin and suddenly it works.
