"Just for a recent example, see Amazon HQ2." That's a good example actually. It's hard to understand that NYC was offering subsidies to Amazon. NYC doesn't really need more people or more companies.

I think there should be a national effort to "spread out" the economy and fight the trend towards centralization in a few areas. If you build more housing in CA, even more people will move there and the overcrowding will become ev

There is nothing wrong with stagnating but in a lot of companies the stagnation level for engineers is pretty low compared to management. You also have to deal with the fact management has decision power so you often get overridden by less

An airplane is a mechanical thing and in the end you have to check that things really work physically. I am sure they have self-check mechanisms that check that the software works right and the sensors produce the right signals but you stil

Yeah, it's pretty sad how even the international community combined can't come up with that money while they piss away multiples of that with weapons purchases and subsidies to already filthy rich companies and people

In my company it's certainly the case that in order to progress on the technical track you need to be extremely good and more importantly on the right projects. I see a lot of mediocre people advance on the management track but only ve

I don’t think you have to be interesting but have an eye for interesting things. One way to do this is not to be “interesting” but to be “interested”. On the other hand it certainly helps to do unusual stuff so you can take pictures not man

I think these books are very valuable for people in management and leadership roles. Instead of just working with the often misguided processes and setups in a lot of companies it’s good to go back to the basics and rethink how things are b

As almost always for cost reasons. What I am trying to say is that some things are more difficult to replace than others. Moving away from slack is doable. Moving away from Outlook is doable. Moving from 100000 Windows machines to Linux is

I would agree. Teams is pretty half baked. It sort of works but the main reason for using it as that it’s cheap if you have office 365 already.

“Could you "replace Outlook" -- it's just an email client after all.” Absolutely. There is always pain in transitions but some are easier than others.

From what I have seen Slack may have a strong a foothold in some teams but overall it’s not hard to use something else when new teams are formed. I’m my company everybody is slowly moving to Teams. This can be done gradually. Definitely mu

They also don’t have very high barriers to entry for competitors. Replacing SAP is really hard after it has been established in a company. On the other hand replacing Slack is really easy. Same for Uber. Customers and drivers can jump ship

It’s still mind boggling that all these unicorns haven’t found a way to make money even after being in business for years and having a mature product. It’s a strange world.

In a lot of companies you will NOT get hired without degree. It's pretty much the barrier to entry before you can show your skills or experience . Not sure if Udacity degrees count for this.

You get used to it. My mom says that sitting in a bunker during a long WW2 bombing (in Germany) is a life changing experience. It damages a lot of people permanently. The question is how they express that damage.
