It's the equivalent of restricting programmers "lines of code typed per hour" in the misguided belief that will reduce bugs.

What would be fantastic would be to overlay the speedcamera locations on the same map. What people would then see, is that there is no correlation between speed cameras and "accident blackspots". If you were able to also plot "hidden hedges

Penalizing drivers based on their speed is like paying programmers based on lines of code. Speed != safety. Lines of code != productivity. It teaches motorists that instead of watching out for dangers, they should be constantly monitoring t

No, they both involve software, writing to a framebuffer. (By software, I mean code - software/firmware/etc). A crappy 'hardware' accelerated GPU can be slower than a 'software' framebuffer write. My point was that saying "It's hardware acc

Downmodders: Can you explain why? My point is, software is rendering the graphics. Either it's software running on one chip, or it's software on another chip. That's irrelevant. What matters, is how fast the graphics are rendered.

Hardware rendered vs software rendered??? :/ It's all just software. The only thing that matters is how fast it is.

Not to be harsh, but how many other transcoding services are there? I can think of none.

> nice piece of code Too many developers are paying way too much attention to the code being "nice" or it being in a "nice" language, and not enough attention to "does it work" "is it fast".

Or you could just use java... The title says only fast languages are interesting, then rules out using Java because it's not lispy enough :/ Either you want speed, or you want your favorite syntax and high level stuff. You can't have both.

Find something you enjoy doing (love), and do it. Take a step back and asses - Do you really really love working 12 hours a day? If not, then stop doing it. If you're working 12 hours a day in the hope that some day it'll all pay off and yo

I don't like a search engine that messes with results. Keep the ads separate. Just my opinion though.

A lot of HN stories are there to tell us what is fashionable and what is not. If it weren't for stories like this, how would I know what technologies to use! </sarcasm>

What's more surprising is that Windows Phones still exist. Would be interesting to do a poll to see if anyone on HN has one. I'm skeptical.

There's little difference between organic and adverts. It's just content that the webmaster has put there. It clearly says "sponsored content", which discloses the fact it's a paid advert. So personally, obviously it's not evil. If people w

True, it's a different philosophy. Personally, I'm in the camp of "rely on as little as you can". This includes not shelling out to bash unless you really really really can't achieve the same thing with a bit of more code. Apart from making

It's also weird IMHO when you see an advert or movie trailer, and they tell you to visit their facebook page, rather than their own website...

I don't see any reason why LaTeX should be shelling out to bash. And having a mish-mash of loads of different languages creates unmaintainable bloatware.

Commercial breaks are a special case. They prevent you from consuming the content until they end. Which is obviously not a great user experience (Although people do need to go make a cup of tea or have a toilet break). Online and print adve

Look at their budget. They spend shedloads. On things they don't need. If wikipedia wanted to survive, it'd trim back it's massive spending.
