The author did limit his "sunk cost" analysis to 7am-7pm due to this exact reason. I think that part at least is quite sound, and is probably the most enlightening takeaway.

There should be something on the box or in the associated paperwork. Think "frustration-free service terms", similar to Amazon's frustration-free packaging. I shouldn't have to dive face-first into reams of legalese just

As a longtime Dropcam owner, I find this very unsettling. Truth be told, Dropcam service has steadily decreased in quality ever since the Nest acquisition. Not a month passes without an unexplained multi-hour outage; our mobile apps are ran

I've personally come to assume that everything I do on an electronic device is being recorded all the time, so the mere presence of surveillance isn't in itself a deterrent. Most reasonable people will IMHO realize that no one

There isn't a totally bullet/fool-proof way, but it boils down to aggressively locking down computing functions to match closely the job functions expected to be performed by every employee. This requires a thorough understanding

I do a lot of craigslist deals, and it's not for the faint of heart. Here in NYC one has to be a bit street smart to avoid getting robbed or worse by a craigslist buyer or seller. Amazon is probably a safer place for most people.

+1. Also goes without saying that Amazon has lots of quality refurb ThinkPads. They're priced accordingly but are solid machines nevertheless.

It's a fun read. You know, I'm not normally one to jump on the "offended" bandwagon. In this case I felt compelled to speak up because the name makes it pretty much impossible to reference or recommend the project in a b

When 5.9 was still -current, https://github.com/ajacoutot/aws-openbsd was a viable if clunky way of producing one's own AMIs. As you can see from the script, there's quite a bit of work that happens before a

GitHub natively supports multiple ssh keys, multiple emails, and the sending of repository alerts to different email addresses. These features make it easy to keep just one GitHub account, which - to me, anyway - sounds like the better opti

I'm "technical" and "hands-on", yet I was gullible enough to believe the story, IM-ed it to my wife, and was surprised when she hadn't panicked like I did. I read way too much science fiction. Back to work now!

The main point in support of your argument is the fact that Unix utils are bundled in larger packages instead of shipping in single-command packages. Think of Fileutils, Shellutils, and Textutils... which got combined to form Coreutils! Ha!

Taking an idea to the logical extreme is an effective means of invalidating said idea. How many UNIX utilities are 17 silly lines long? A bit of code duplication would go a long way towards bringing sanity to JS land.

I have a private Twitter account and use it as a personal diary of sorts. I see Twitter as a write-mostly device with some recall capability. There also happen to be 300-odd individuals who have read-only access to my diary. It's great

The last 5S I've owned got replaced five (5) times. I'm not joking! Every apple device I've owned since my first PowerBook G4 in 2003 completely justified the purchase of AppleCare.

It all comes down to AppleCare: I don't want to own an aftermarket phone that isn't covered for damage by anything other than my own wallet. The 5/5S can only remain a viable option for me if they're sold directly by App
