'“You rely on e-mail, cannot do a lot of talking and the subtleties can get lost. So you do miss things.”' Having worked remotely for nearly four years, I've concluded that the problem lies with people who are bad at communicating -- at lea

Unfortunately, bzr is still pretty slow at log. It's also slow at branching a remote repo, and subsequent merges or pulls from that remote repo. On the bright side, it used to be unusably slow (for large projects, anyway) when doing thing

What you know is wrong. Some lisps are interpreted, some are compiled. SBCL is one of the compiled ones. If you're interested in scheme, bigloo is an option; there are surely others.

1) A better mail transfer protocol. I don't view spam as inherently inevitable, but with SMTP it seems to be. 2) Internationalization from the ground up. Domain names are still effectively limited to 7 bit ASCII (even though "dots" are re

I found it to be so, yes. What see on news.yc is black text over a beige background (except for posts' metadata, which is grey over beige).

A little too sure of himself? Really? I'd say the opposite: he qualifies almost everything he says, and, besides, his essays tend to be, for lack of a better way to put it, a snapshot of Stevey's mind at a given point in time. I agree wit

Never would have thought that someone could come up with a better cvs? Really? I bumped into cvs' limitations the first time I committed a badly named file. Also, making it out like the history of open source version control tools goes cv

Zeno's paradox (deliberately?) confuses a thing — motion — with its measurement. You can always measure something with higher resolution, but so what?

Hardly anybody knows about opportunity cost. And in the case of many poor people, all they have in abundance is time anyway. Sad, but true.

The nerdiest scheme I encountered was naming machines after elements, and matching the last part their IPs with the atomic number of the element in question.

Many of the offices I've worked in have named meeting rooms after cities. But there was never any confusion -- I guess when you say "the meeting's in Milan in 5 minutes" there isn't any ambiguity. (I did try to get out of a few meetings in

You got it right. http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Code_Contributing_FAQ has more information. Other companies with a split proprietary/free model require copyright assignments for contributions as well. So, too, does the FSF, although for r

It would take more than a technical solution -- currently many people who handle luggage are not really accountable to passengers. (They're probably not paid too well, either.) I learned this the hard way when my wife (foolishly, to be sur
